Chemical Structure Kevlar is a type of fiber called aromatic polyamide (aramid) as known as super-heroes of the fiber world. Aramid fiber is produced by spinning a solid fiber from a liquid resulting polymer chains allowing the increase in fiber strength. Kevlar is formed by a condensation reaction of an amine (1,4-phenylene-diamine) and acid chloride (terephthaloyl - chloride)(Kablr,2012). When Kevlar is spun, the chains lock together via H-bonds to form a sheet that has a very high tensile strength of about 3,620 MPa, and a relative density of 1.44 (Quintanilla, 1990). (Kablr,2012). Three Grades of Kevlar There are 8 types of Kevlar available but 3 being the most commonly used. The most common Kevlar fibers are Kevlar®, Kevlar® K-29 and Kevlar® K-49(Ryan,2011). Kevlar® is mainly used as reinforcement in tires and rubber mechanical goods. Kevlar® K-29 is used for industrial applications such as body armor, cables, and brake lining due to its lightweight and non-flammable. Kevlar® K-49 has very high tensile strength of all aramids and is used in boat hulls, and in the aerospace industry as well as military jets.
