Before this there was an amateur affair in 1904 which was a professional league created in the United States. This organisation was known as the International Pro Hockey League. But this foundation folded in 1907 when the National Hockey Association (NHA) emerged three years later. The first step into the international federation was in 1909 when associations from England and Belgium agreed to mutually recognise each other to try and regulate the international hockey association. The French soon joined. The Pacific Coast League (PCL) was a transnational championship which was played in 1914. Only men played in this as women’s hockey was not yet played. Men ran the National Hockey Association but decided to suspend any operations when World War I happened. This threw the whole hockey establishment into disorder. The international hockey foundation was then founded in 1924 and is still called the FIH. Paul Leautey.M.Leautey was the founder of the FIH and was also the first ever president of this foundation. In 1925 Australia and Denmark became part of the FIH soon followed by the Dutch men in 1926 and turkey in 1927. Soon after that in 1928 Germany, Poland, Portugal and India joined. So in 1964 there were 50 countries associated with the FIH with three continental associations including Africa, Pan America and Asia. Then in 1974 there were a total of 71 members apart of the FIH. Today there are five continental associations, 127 national associations and it is still growing every year.
