We were on the road for hours riding in circles, to get to our destination, but it was the one night my friends and I will never forget. It was Saturday August 29, 2015 and I was in Washington D.C. with my three friends: Leia, Kerien, and Breanna. We stayed at the Hostel Hotel downtown on 11th street. We stayed there for three nights and four days. The scary part for us when we were in the lobby and we found out what a Hostel hotel was, we then heard that the rooms were dormitory style with bunk beds, for example if there were 4 of us in a room and we had a total of 6 beds, this meant that 2 strangers could stay in our room. We also had to share a bathroom with the entire 4th floor and shared a kitchen area to cook our meals. These hotels are known to be cheap. It was 8:30 at night; we were talking to our friends, playing around at the pool table, and listening to music. We were all tired from walking around the city. We gathered up our belongings and walked up the stairs together . Then 10 minute Leia’s mom came into our room and informs us not to go outside the room, because she will be downstairs cleaning up the kitchen from dinner. Leia asked, “Why”…

There is something so exciting about meeting people from all over the world. I highly encourage this, especially in your hostel. People in hostels can generally be trusted because usually people stay in groups. However, once you 're in public be a little more careful withon who you chat with. Often times, I will lie about traveling alone as a safety measure when I am out. People always ask who you 're with and I usually say "I came with friends, they are [insert place close by]." The idea behind…

During this week forty six years ago in 1968, my grandfather was in the same position I am currently in today. He was in his beginning weeks of college at Illinois State University. Everything was new to him; new people, a new school, and a new place where he would live for the next four years. He lived in a dormitory, however the building he was originally supposed to stay in was under construction when it came to the start of the school year. He was temporarily put in a double room that housed…

In pop culture, teenagers are often portrayed as rebellious, disobedient, and uncontrollable. This behavior sometimes replicates itself in real life among real teenagers, and many parents try everything in their power to curb such dangerous behavior; grounding, taking away electronics, and long lectures are just a few techniques a parent may use. When none of this works and the safety of teenagers are brought into question, the age-old question rises again: do curfews, both parent given and…

Two main reasons contribute to why I would love to become a Resident Advisor. To help make campus housing fun and safe is the first reason. Students spend majority of their time in college inside the residence halls. I want to be able to show students that he/ or she can do more than just sleep here. RSA and other RA’s provide many fun events to the students and I would love to a part of planning those fun events. In addition, I would like to show students that he or she does not have to party…

A new journey began for me this past August. As of August, I officially moved into my first college dorm room in order to start the path to my future. By doing so, I have given myself the opportunity to be educated at a higher level than high school, which will allow me to learn all that I need to in order to be successful and eventually work in the career of my dreams. However, this isn’t any college dorm room I moved into. This is one of many college dorm rooms that lie in Lincoln…

What I Learned From the Fire During finals week, you learn to expect the unexpected, which was proven quite true for me while I was studying for my last, and arguably hardest two tests of my freshman year. I was only days away of sleeping in and binge watching “The Office” without worrying about classes. I could not wait to get out of the dorms and back in my own bed for the summer, but for now I was frantically studying. I was sitting up against the wall on my uncomfortable dorm bed with my…

Living in a resident hall can be a taxing thing for some students. The origin of their struggle can sometimes lie in the dullness and sterile, cramp feel of their dorm room.
