Living in a resident hall can be a taxing thing for some students. The origin of their struggle can sometimes lie in the dullness and sterile, cramp feel of their dorm room. But resident life doesn’t have to feel that way. With a little creativity and a few simple steps, resident students can transform their standard issued space into a personalized abode.
Brittany Weaver, a sophomore biblical and theological studies major and a resident assistant at Foster Residence hall, said utilizing a small living space can be a challenge, but there are several tips students can uses to optimize their situation.
Weaver said door rooms have a lot of unused space, like what walls and ceilings, that can be utilized for hanging storage.

One aspect that helps change the atmosphere of the room is lighting, Williamson said and lamps create a more comfortable light than the overhead fluorescent ones.
"Floor lamps are really good because they stand on their own," Williamson said. "You don't have to have a surface to put them on.”
Williamson said also having a room with soft colors and an aromatherapy diffuser can help relieve the stress of student’s hectic lives.
Having seating is important to creating a space that fosters community and Williamson said she has modified furniture that is multi-functional, such as a dresser that has been transformed to also function as a seating area.
"So it's a seat, but it also has drawer space." Williamson said.
Constructed storage space is something Williamson said she sees residents often including in their doom rooms.
"I see a lot of people make their own shelves,” Williamson said. “That really helps because there's not a lot of shelf space. You need somewhere to put books stuff, so I see a lot of people making their own
