Mark Hubbard, professor of agriculture, said there are several different types of houseplants that would be a positive addition to students living space. “Any house plants that you can probably get it at Lowe's would be pretty good,” Hubbard said. “But there are some house plants that are little trickier and picky about light and water levels.” The trickiest thing about growing plants in in a dorm room is light level, Hubbard said. “I would say put the plant in as much light as you can,” Hubbard said. “If you can put it by the window, that would be great. If it's on the table a few feet away from the window, that would be okay as well. But light would be the main issue, so the closer to the window the better.” Because the low levels of light most dorm rooms receive and the busy schedules of students, Hubbard said students should look for easy and forgiving houseplants that can “tolerate some abuse.” Some plants Hubbard said he would suggest are the Dumb cane; Peace lily; Chinese Evergreen and Spider plant. Hubbard said watering houseplants should not be overwatered. “Most houseplants, particularly those ones I mentioned, probably don't need to be watered more than once a week," Hubbard said.
