Introduction
The education in the institution can no longer be confined to the two traditional functions of teaching and the advancement of knowledge. People have realized that knowledge alone is not enough. Education in institution must contribute to be all-round development of the students by providing them opportunities to learn how to live and work together co-operatively so that they become ideal citizens. These citizens are a valuable asset to the society for they are to be the future leaders in different walks of life. The word ‘hostel’ may have been taken from ‘host’ the literal meaning of which is, ‘person who entertains guests’. The term ‘hostel might have been used for an inn because ‘inn’ is the place where persons from anywhere can stay. Later on “hostel” was used strictly for a place where the students reside for the purpose of learning. The Advanced Learner’s Dictionary of Current English defines “hostel” as a building in which board and lodging are provided (with the support of the authorities concerned) for students.
In the west ‘Hall of Residence’ is more familiar a terminology than ‘hostel’. ‘Hall of Residence’ means a building for campus students. Besides, ‘Sorority’,’Dormitory’,’House’, and ‘Student Housing’ are other terms which are used in the west.
In ancient India there were many seats of learning which provided education and were essentially residential by nature. Therefore, they stood both for ‘centre of learning’ and ‘residence’ or ‘hostel’, e.g., Ashram, Gurukula, Agrahara and Temple, etc. Later on, after a lapse of time, they turned to be called as Chhatrashala and Chhatrishala. Much later these terms were converted into ‘Chhatravas’ in most of the states of India. But now some other terms are also used for Chhatravas, e.g., ‘Hostel’, ‘Bhawan’, ‘Hall of Residence’, ‘vastigrih’, etc.

Advantages of Hostel
Hostel life is very advantages for those who undertake it. The inmates get better facility for study through discussion in a hostel than in any other place. Here they learn discipline through the rigor of rules and through mutual adjustment and co-operation.
Disadvantages of Hostel
Hostel-life suffers from the possible disadvantages. These are due to some unruly inmates or to some unworthy Superintendents or to both the sides. Lack of essential necessities and necessary provisions bears a very bad effect on hostel discipline.
Aim of the Survey
In a hostel, students of different places, different families, different tastes and temperaments happen to live together. Here they sink down their differences and try to adjust with one another and learn how to live successfully in a large society after they leave their school.
