    much lighter weight. This time I completed several sets of controlled repetitions, and I returned to my room an hour later invigorated that I took a risk and succeeded. I was hooked immediately. I began weight lifting 5 days a week and found a new sense of dedication that was unparalleled. 3 months later, despite my decision to go back to the gym after walking out in shame, I still lacked confidence. In constantly remembering what it felt like to fall to the ground, I had let fear get the better of me. I didn’t actively try to raise the weight in my exercises because I was afraid of failing again. On a Monday in December, I walked into the gym and was delighted to find that they had purchased new barbells. I grabbed one, loaded on the usual amount of weight that I used for barbell rows, and started lifting. I noticed it was significantly harder than it had been the previous week and thought I must be getting weaker. After a brief struggle, I finished my set and checked the bar. The new bars were 15 pounds heavier than the old ones. The voice in the back of my head telling me that I couldn’t do it was wrong. I could do it. The only thing holding me back was my thoughts, and in overcoming them I progressed through freshmen year with greater self-confidence and an even greater vigor for weight lifting.
