The Importance Of Lab Safety
school year in my classroom was spent on lab safety rules and procedure. I made it a priority to spend a lot of time reviewing lab safety they have had prior to seventh grade and what I wanted them to know for this year. We spent two days the first week of school learning and reviewing lab safety rules and procedures. Each student was read and shown an official list of lab safety rules that apply to seventh grade science. Each of the rules and procedure was demonstrated through scenarios that students might come across in a lab situation. As a project was assigned at the end of that first week of school, that each student had to design a Lab Safety Meme to demonstrate one of our science class lab safety rules.
Before each every lab assignment we do review lab safety that applies to the lab assignment that we are doing. What I have found to work best, is that I spend a day prior to the lab assignment and model the whole lab for students including a review of how to properly use lab equipment and any safety issues they might come across in the lab assignment. This technique of modeling I have found cuts back on time wasted during the lab the next day, eliminating questions, and confusion and a better quality lab right up.
One improvement that I can make when it comes to lab safety is posting lab safety rules throughout the classroom as visual reminders. What I wanted to originally do was post the lab safety memes as visual reminders of rules. However, my mistake was I gave…
