The Correspondence Theory of Truth can be traced back to early Greek philosophers. Aristotle defined Truth as: “To say of what is that it is not, or of what is not that it is, is false, while to say of what is that it is, and of what is not that it is not, is true.” While the theory has undergone countless revisions, it still maintains that the determining factor in Truth is whether or not a premise accurately describes reality. For example, we may say Heliocentrism is true and that we can say so because said model is an accurate depiction of “what is.” This is why there is placed so much confidence in this theory and why it seems the most intuitive to people. It would seem that someone who pursued something that did not seek to align with accurately portraying reality then they would be engaged with something different than truth or -- at least -- a truth of a different kind.…
Vladimir Lenin once said, "A lie told often enough becomes the truth." (BrainyQuote). Unfortunately, in this day and age, with increasing talk of fake news and other forms of distortion of the truth, lies turning into truth seem more commonplace than ever. While some may be comfortable with the phenomenon of the distortion of the truth, others may not be as complacent around it. The distortion of truth, however, is not a new development; it has taken many forms and names over history, whether as…
is the study of knowledge. To ascertain knowledge, one must possess the ability to determine truth and falsity. If it is not unclear whether something is actually true or not, then no viable knowledge can arise. Attempting to discern knowledge without truth can be likened to taking a test when neither the subject nor the material was learned. There was no study material on which to base the student’s answers for the test just as there is no truth on which to base knowledge. In order for a…
fact an android and not his real mother. Data finds out that the biological woman who raised him is dead, and the person Data met is an android replica of his mother who believes that she is human and not actually an android. After Data is aware of the situation, he has to make the decision whether to tell his mother the truth or keep it a secret. Henry Frankfurt, the author of On Truth, would have a valuable opinion about the situation Data is stuck in. On Truth by Henry Frankfurt is a short…
Truth is defined as something that is accurate or exact, and death is defined as the permanent end to something. The question “Is Truth Dead?” has no right or wrong answer, the reason being that the answers you receive from people will be based on feeling and logic, there will never be an answer that is 100% accurate. That being said I believe that honesty is not dead but it is indeed dying, it is dwindling more and more with each passing generation. The question really is “why do I feel feel…
Shadows and Truth Plato uses the visual of the cave to help people realize how their senses deceive them and give them a belief system but not knowledge. The images seen on the walls of the cave look like and sound like anything that performers want to portray. This isn’t knowledge. This is a gimmick used by people of authority to control, and maintain people to their liking. It’s an enticing of the senses. So what happens when we look beyond the shadows? The description of the cave and…
Friedrich Nietzsche takes a markedly different stance on knowledge- exhibiting a poetic yet nihilistic perspective in his rant On Truth and Lies. Nietzsche persuasively argues that perceived knowledge is merely a human construct capable of fabricating “the illusion of truth”, while also unfolding its principle power in “dissimulation” (Nietzsche 13). Truth as a product of untruth, he claims, exists as a survival mechanism for humans, and that society hypothesizes these ‘truths’ from discrete…
the difference between story-truth and happening truth. In Tim O’Brien’s book about the Vietnam War he tells many stories. He starts off by explaining what each man carried, going into the war itself where people are killing other people and soldiers are dying, then talking about a man O’Brien killed, ending with what types of emotion these soldiers brought home with them. Some feel grief, torn, lost, and others simply feel okay. War gives each man a different feeling towards it. I think…
Honesty is key in medical situations, but can it be beneficial to withhold the truth? Most patients expect the truth, but there are cases when it may seem to be more beneficial to disclose information. Understandably, it is normally quite hard for patients to receive the truth. Delivery of truth is important, but there is not much else to do. Could it be better to withhold the truth in certain situations, such as people who may not be able to handle it, a dying patient, or even requests to not…
1.Is there such a thing as truth in research? Expound upon your answer. Give an example. I believe looking at the truth in the aspect of research is often based on the concept of evidence or proof that is collected on the topic as well as the reality of what the dynamics of the subject is. We often build on the topic we investigate on by the information we gather on what we see as truth. The information of truth is usually based around research of examination. In the article "On Truth" it…
