The photo on the right shows a medical technician using an ultrasound machine to diagnose appendicitis to a patient, without the use of x-rays. The ultrasound imaging technique involves using high frequency sound waves and their echoes. The machine transmits high-frequency sound pulses into the patient’s body using a probe. In the image, the technician presses and moves the probe along the patient’s body. This photo was taken in the St. Louis Children’s Hospital, and obtained from *. In terms…
Anna Coletti Adrienne Hollifield AP English IV 15 October 2014 The Evolution of Audio Recordings From the crude beats of an ancient drum to the electronic sounds of a modern synthesizer, music has evolved over millennia. Since the invention of the audio recorder, people have been able to document the evolution of music so that history can actually be heard. Recording devices have developed from tinfoil and hand cranks to complex computer systems. When music was first being recorded, musicians…
Introduction The acoustic reflex (AR) describes the involuntary contraction of the stapedius tendon in response to high-intensity sound (Emanuel, 2009). An intricate neural network, receiving afferent input from the vestibulocochlear nerve and sending efferent output to the facial nerve, controls contraction (Emanuel, 2009). The reflex is intensity-dependent, as particular intensities cause the contraction. Once contracted, it lessens the vibrations traveling through the stapes footplate as it…
not a dramatic as Varese’s Poeme Electronique. Shaw uses some electronic sounds and characteristics of experiments within her piece, but her main sound was the use of whispers, shouts, and cries to make her pieces unique. A few examples of experimentation in Shaw’s piece was in the beginning when the voices of the singer became louder and turn into cries. Shaw was experimenting with new vocals and trying to get them to sound different.…
jazz roll style, 4 bars blues. One can hear the sound of cymbals with a little bass drum every now and then which gives the song a rock and roll feeling to it; it was an electronic sound coming out of the keyboard. It wasn’t too overwhelming because the guitar and keyboard sound accompanying it gave it that mellow feel that is usually found in jazz. So the each sounds were balanced to give it that jazz roll. You could enjoy that beautiful jazz sound with the…
Power House is where I escaped, it 's where I lifted heavy weights and got sweaty, and it 's where I hit new personal records, but that was all taken away from me about a month ago. Power House was the first gym I ever got a membership too and it brought me and my best friends together so it will always hold a special spot in my heart. The gym that was so special to me closed a few weeks ago because the owner couldn 't afford it anymore, I was heartbroken to see my gym shut down. The gym has…
the beginning of the ballad, the rhythmic pattern of an ascending triplet then a whole note was repeated many times. Billy had great diction which allowed him to have a bright timbre with very forward vowels that resonated near the nose. This sound reflected a broadway type voice and also added another layer of the freeness of the piece. In the last refrain, the ascending triplet pattern was performed again, reflecting the beginning of the song. The last note was was held out for very long…
instruments, rather than just listening to the sounds. Many of the songs that were played also sounded quite similar. I noticed that the first two songs sounded almost the same because they both were in an upbeat tempo, had a higher pitch, and sounded like bagpipes were being played. This was probably the most striking thing that I saw here. I thought that it was very interesting that there could be a variety of instruments played together that could make it sound like there were bagpipes…
This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Artist-Faculty Recital Series at the Fairchild Theatre on MSU 's Campus. The concert featured a multitude of pieces ranging from the Baroque and Classical music periods to modern day compositions. Several of the pieces were played in a piano-trombone basso continuo and the last piece was played by a trombone choir with two featured soloists. Going into the concert I did not know what to expect. I had listened to classical music in my MUS…
The sounds, the smell, the sights, and the eerie and melancholy, but somehow always beautiful sound of jazz music assaulted the man's eardrums, as usual, as the dusk began to darkness, and the final rays of the sun lit up the sky in an incandescent, orange glow, which perfectly match the scene. New Orleans was a city, Michael O'Loughlin was still to become accustom to, and that showed in the way his bright green eyes shifted from side to side, his attention caught by the bright dolls and…
