Guns are often acquired without the intention of being used in a violent crime; civilians often look to obtain firearms for self-defense or sport. In the United States, citizens have the right to bear arms, which is a right protected by the Second Amendment of the Constitution. Nevertheless, with every right, there are laws that need to be followed. Gun control laws try to prevent the use of firearms by criminals and minors but there are ways around it that can be completely legal for the firearm provider in private transactions. According to the Law and Philosophy professor Charles W. Collier, the use of firearms in a society causes a "nervous society, a very timid society, one in which people are afraid to exercise even those dwindling constitutional rights that are compatible with the unlimited ‘right to bear arms’,” (Collier, 86) which falls in contrast with the National Rifle Association allegations that “an armed society is a polite society” (86).
