John M. Darley and Bibb Latane 's essay, "When will people help in a crisis?" could argue that people have become cold and should open their eyes to what is going on around them so they do not neglect the people surrounding them. We should agree with Darley and Lanate because there are people who choose to ignore those around them even when those people are being abused. One point Darley and Latane make is that American ideology is a leading cause of a lack of response when someone is in need. In one section of the essay, they focus on one main ideology that plays a major role in today 's society, but they suggest that this ideology is impairing Americans from their surroundings. For instance, Darley and Latane write "... Americans consider it bad manners to look closely at other people in public. We are taught to respect the privacy of others, and when among strangers we close our ears and avoid staring." (437). Darley and Latane are pointing out a sick reality we face quite often in today 's world. According to Darley and Latane, this mindset of privacy is corrupting this nation. They believe that when we conform to this ideology we are choosing to ignore those all around and by ignoring those all around, we are helping out the attacker and harming the victim even more. I have seen this in the form of a girl, eight years old at the time, who had gone through multiple sexual assaults. But the people she told about the molestation had done nothing about it out of respect…
