    Pendulum Essay

During the course of this practical, the different factors of a pendulum will be investigated. A pendulum is a mass held from a fixed point so it is able to swing freely, the mass swings back and forth in an arc. The formula for finding the period of a certain pendulum lies in the change of the length of string suspending the mass, and the force due to gravity where the pendulum is being used. This relationship is shown in the equationT=2π√( L/g) (Sean, 2010), as the length of the string increases the period will increase, and as the force due to gravity increases the period will decrease. In this experiment the relationship between mass of the ball and the period will be investigated, it is assumed from the equation that the changing of the mass will have no affect at all on the period of the pendulum as it is not even included in the equation. Using the formula for pendulum period, a true value of the period of the pendulum being used in this experiment is able to be calculated. T=2π√( 0.300/9.81). The period to be expected for all increments of mass is 1.10 assuming that the gravitational pull of earth is equal to 9.81 to 3 significant figures (ISU, 2001). Aim: To determine the effect of changing masses on the period of a pendulum. Variables: The independent variable is the masses of the pendulum ball. Mass is chosen because its affect on the period of the pendulum will be found. The different mass increments will be 19.89, 49.91, 100.03, 200.04, 300.04, 501.01 grams. The…
