Cognitive views on learning endeavour to explain what behaviourism ignores, the interaction between consciousness and the environment. Furthermore, they place emphasis on the neurological processes of working memory (Dobozy, 2014; O’Donnell et al., 2016, p. 328). While working in education, I have been introduced to concepts related to working memory, but none have explained the process as well as Baddeley’s model of working memory. Baddeley’s model challenges previous notions that working memory flows in a single orderly manner by introducing a component of management (Mcleod, 2008). Baddeley’s model of working memory seeks to explain how memory processes are directed by a managerial system called the ‘central executive’ (O’Donnell et al.,…

The working memory model, as introduced by Baddeley and Hitch in 1974, outlined two distinct components: the phonological loop (PL) which deals with auditory information, and the visuospatial sketchpad which is concerned with visuo-spatial data. The PL consists of two parts, the phonological store and the articulatory control process (ACP). According to Baddeley and Hitch, auditory information is held in the store for about two seconds while the ACP recycles this information, through…

Memory is a fundamental factor in psychology that has been found difficult to explain and measure as it is not tangible or measurable. Three main memory models have been devised which attempt to explain the different aspects of memory, one of which is the Working Memory Model. This model is used to explain short-term memory and its components and is constantly working to encode information we receive and pass it to our Long-term memory. We will be discussing how we use the working memory and…

In Alan Baddeley’s article, “Is Working Memory Still Working?” he broke down the components of working memory in an attempt to discover if it still works efficiently. After analyzing multiple studies, the conclusion that working memory has always worked, and still works, was developed. While Baddeley gave a systematic and detailed analysis of applicable research, there are several issues with this article. Throughout the article his tone lacked confidence, tenses switched frequently, figures…

or minus two, helps confirm the capacity of short term memory (Miller, 1956). Most people 18 and over can hold 5 to 9 items in their short term memory (Miller, 1956). Miller believed that short term memory could only hold his magic number because of the limited “slots” in which memory could be placed in the brain. Miller reached this conclusion by getting the participants of the initial study to listen to a number of tones that were different by pitch. Every sound was produced solely, and the…

Memory is often defined as the processing, storage and retrieval of information acquired through learning. Essentially, memory is a neurological representation of some prior event or experience. Although there are other ways of defining memory, all descriptions typically refer to memory as requiring and therefore involving three fundamental processes: encoding, storage and retrieval. In the 1960’s with the introduction of the computer, many psychologists described these processes using the…

The most prominent theory of working memory is Baddeley’s multicomponent model (Baddeley,1986, 2000; Baddeley & Hitch,1974). The assumption of this theory is that working memory is made up of several different components. These components are the phonological loop, the visuo-spatial sketchpad, the episodic buffer, and the central executive. The phonological loop, visuo-spatial sketchpad, and episodic buffer are specialized subsystems under the control of a generalized executive controller,…

The question being posed here here is does a change in language cause an impairment on your ability to retain memories? The study went about solving this by conducting a test on a college cognitive psychology class using an application based off of ISE. The conclusion to this study was that the class supported…
