Each wallet is connected to a central "blockchain" that hosts the logs of every single transaction in the cyrptocurrency network. After obtaining a wallet of the desired coin type the user is ready to aquire the coins which can be done in a few different ways. The most common mean of obtaining coins is purchasing through one of the many exchange services that buy and sell coins for more standard forms of currency. Most money changers are extremely strict and often require a proof of address and identification to comply with anti money laundering logging procedures. You can also "mine" for coins. Mining is the process of verifying the users transactions and adding them to the blockchain. This introduces new coins into the circulation as miners are rewarded for every transaction they process. Each time a series of transactions or a "block" is solved the system makes the algorithm to verify these transaction harder. In Bitcoin 's case the rewards were designed to cut in half every four years to prevent inflation and keep the total number of coins in circulation to 21 million.
