  • Troy Bolton: High School Musical

The character that I critically analyzed is Troy Bolton, from the High School Musical franchise. Troy is portrayed as the high school hunk, as he is the captain of the basketball team, a heartthrob that the girls admire and want to be with, and an idol to the other boys who strive to be as cool as him. Not only is Troy represented as a teenage jock, but he also has a passion for performing in musicals, which contrasts and contradicts many of the theories we have studied in this course. Troy’s character can be effectively analyzed using Pierre Bourdieu’s Cultural Deprivation Theory, and Becky Francis’ Gender Gap Theory. Pierre Bourdieu’s cultural deprivation theory explains how the way individuals are raised, and the values learned from your family, shapes your taste as you age. This affects the choices that an individual makes regarding what they buy, wear, and overall daily decisions. In High School Musical, Troy’s father is the coach for the high school basketball team that Troy plays on. When his father played, he was the star of his team, and has always wanted the same for his…

  • High School Musical Perceptions

On my first day of (public) school ever, I walked into the wrong classroom, went to the wrong lunch, was late to class and forgot my locker combination (several times). This was two years ago. Considering that I had to debunk my own fair share of rumors about being homeschooled -- so, you just watch TV all day? Do you even have any friends? Are you like a genius, or something? -- I probably shouldn’t have been too surprised when my High School Musical perceptions of public school were a bust.…

  • Graduation Speech: Jay County High School Musicals

“Gee the whole crowd’s together again. I could cry.” That’s one of the final lines, spoken by the character Frenchy, in the musical “Grease.” The characters Jan and Sandy respond before the teens in the story about young love and fast cars sing a verse of the song “We Go Together” as they dance their way off the stage. When Jamie Valentine, Alec Hutchison, Jenna Blount, Alex Denton and the rest of the cast perform that scene Sunday afternoon, we hope it marks the rebirth of musicals at Jay…

  • Personal Narrative: High School Musical Movies

jerk back in Junior High. I was home schooled so I wasn 't used to socializing outside of the family. I decided to use the "High School Musical" movies as my guide. I know, the stupidity of a 14-year-old girl is amazing! Anyway, back in 8th grade that began changing. The change started in a small windowless room. The air was stale and reeked of cheap perfume. Most of the class was relaxing, chatting with each other near the door and waiting for the bell to ring for lunch. However, on the other…
