over 20 years all airlines used floppy disks to perform the “uploading” of data to the plane and the components on the plane but with the knowledge of floppy disks no longer being made and the inherent problems of robustness, cost and reliability of floppies, the airlines are looking into digital media. The media that was typically saved to the floppy disks is now being saved in digital format into databases, computers and other devices used within the industry ahead of the demise of floppy disks. There is still a need to get this media from a digital storage location and loaded onto a plane and this is where the GroundLink Comm+ fills that need. The Groundlink Comm+ can have the digital media, loadable software, assigned to it through a web interface or other programs. All airlines that use this product have a network in which these loadable software parts will get copied to the Comm+ through the network and once the Comm+ receives the product it will install the software. This semi automation has reduced time in loading the plane since there are less manual steps involve and the actual process of “installing” the software onto the devices is done with software instead of by hand. In the past the mechanic would have to insert a floppy, wait till the unit was done with the disk and then insert the next disk and so on. This also reduced overhead since the airlines no longer needed to make floppy disks, multiple times a year, and ship those disks throughout their airline hubs.…
