I think a new change such as this could possibly lighten the load of our medical staff if patients were trained in this area of managing their own medications. However, with less work on the back end requires far more work and preparation on the front end. After reviewing many of the points that need to be followed, it is a trade off as to whether you have more work in administering each patient or having them medicate themselves and lighten the workload. On the other hand, if one of the points is not followed through precisely according to the Joint Commission or CMS, then the loss of accreditation could ensue or even legal repercussions; the risk of this would just create more stress in regards to a health crisis and negligence lawsuit. I think many would opt for not going down this path because there are too many factors to focus on in order to remain Joint Commission or CMS compliant. It would be easier to have the staff just monitor everything for the patient instead of risk having family members or the patient do it themselves.…
