The prosthetics during the Dark Age were composed of iron and some had functional details (Kwon,2016). For instance knights were equipped with a functional arm used to hold a shield or for the leg to be present in the stirrups (Norton,2007). Although there was a slight advancements during this time, the wealthy and “pirates” had wooden peg legs and hooked metal hands, which during this time many of the “soldiers” didn’t have these advanced prosthetics. The major change during this time is that prosthetics were more used for fighting during war times, than for looks and the feel of wholeness. The Renaissance was a time of returning to the medical discoveries of the Greeks and Romans concerning prosthetics, therefore the Renaissance proved to be the rebirth in the history of prosthetics (Norton,2007). “During this time prosthetics were made out of iron, steel, copper, and wood” stated by Norton. In the early 1500’s during the Renaissance, German named Gotz had a pair of technologically advanced iron hands. Gotz’s hands could be manipulated by setting them with the natural hand and moved by relaxing a series of releases and springs while being suspended with leather straps. (Norton,2007) Also during the Renaissance, the 16th century, Ambroise Pare (French Army barber/surgeon) invented an above the knee device.
