We have all been on the highway and seen a semi with a tanker trailer attached. You have probably even noticed the different placards or signs on the trailer, but didn’t pay much attention to them. These placards are placed so that you can identify what kind of hazard the material presents. There are two Hazardous Material Identification Systems that first responders use to quickly identify the material being transported. The first is the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA0 704 system. The second is the Code of Federal Regulations 49 (CFR 49). The NFPA, “is used on storage tanks and smaller containers.” (Hazardous Materials Identifications Systems, (N.D.) The CFR 49, “is used exclusively on containers and tanks transported in interstate commerce. The U.S. Department of Transportation (DOT) is responsible for this system.” (Hazardous Materials Identifications Systems, (N.D.) Let’s go back to that semi with the tanker trailer attached. That semi is now being driven down a very busy highway in Los Angeles, CA during rush house. Out of nowhere the semi, the semi and trailer explode. There were two bombs placed, one on the trailer and one on the semi.
