to us, impossible. Furthermore, it’s true that disrupted schemas, both in and out of the book, often create humor or at the very least amusement. The example used by Abbas and Rahman that stands out the most here is Carroll’s use of homonymy and homophony. They use the mouse’s speech to the wet characters as an example, writing, “The play upon the word ‘dry’ in this context creates humour through its contextual misinterpretation” (Abbas 6). Oftentimes Carroll will use a pun to confuse a…
Bach’s stay in Weimar was characterized by his keyboard and orchestral works. He learned to write dramatic openings and employ the dynamic motor rhythms and harmonic schemes found in the music of the Italians. This is a direct influence to the progressive type of music that Beethoven is so well known for. Though his stay in Weimar was influential, it was also short lived. In 1717 he moved to secure a job at Cothen. After the move, it didn’t take long for Bach’s life to be changed forever. In…
Today I will be talking about Johann Sebastian Bach and sharing the joys of his music. Bach was born in 1685 in Eisenach, in what appears to have been the Holy Roman Empire at the time, he also seems to have died in the Holy Roman Empire in 1750, Leipzig. At the time of his birth, many of his family members were musicians, including all of his uncles, this lead to any local musician being jokingly called a ‘Bach’ since the Bach family was so prominent at the time. Since his family was full of…
Stony Brook Symphony Concert Report The orchestra is an aspect of music that dates back several centuries. Due to it’s long history and various advancements in musical instruments, the orchestra has evolved tremendously. Today, a typical orchestra contains a vast amount of instruments from the string, woodwind, brass, and percussion families. This is no different for the Stony Brook Symphony Orchestra. I had the pleasure of attending one of this ensembles breathtaking concerts on November 7,…
organized around the Tenth Century. Gagaku has three forms songs along with chanted poetry or Kayō, instrumental or Kangen, and dances along with music or Bugaku. Today we will be exploring Kangen. The music is mainly monophonic with moments of homophony. Gagaku is punctuated by drums which creates the effect of meditation music. It has no emotion, is very static, and a rather slow pace. Gagaku has six modes, each of which have an emotion they evoke and their own pitch. For example water,…
On Tuesday May 10, I attended a concert by the rock band, Dorothy at The Echo. The band lineup included: Dorothy Martin(vocals), Mark Jackson(guitar), Gregg Cash (bass), Zac Morris (Drums). Unfortunately, I was only able to hear two original songs of their own creation: “Missile” and “After Midnight”. Both songs were met with enthusiastic applause and praise. I was actually anxious to see them perform live as they were mentioned in Rolling Stone magazine as a promising new band and because I had…
It was not too long ago that I started listening to the music of Beethoven out of interest. I had always dreamed of organizing my own symphony, making each and every piece with the technical mastery of that of the most incredible composers like him. When it came to portraying serious emotions such as anger, frustration or even sorrow; few could contest Beethoven. For this assignment, I decided to go with one of my favourite pieces of his: Symphony No. 7. Focusing on the second movement, before…
cognitively, and physically impaired. Hierarchy of human needs theory: suggests that the four lower levels of basic physiological needs must be met before people pursue the four higher levels of human development (Maslow, 1943a; 1943b; 1954; 1971). Homophony: is a melodic line accompanied by subordinate voices (Bonds,…
Music is composed of many different elements that together give feeling to what we hear. These elements include rhythm, beat, accent, meter, syncopation, tempo, pitch, dynamics, tone color, overtone, scales, melody, harmony, texture, tonality, and mode. Just like with chemical elements, combining musical elements will create something new and exciting, and different combinations will give something distinct to the music. All sixteen elements mentioned are equally important and together…
On December 11th, a Sunday night, I went to Les Joulins Jazz Bistro to listen to Bill “Doc” Webster and his band Jazz Nostalgia. Me and my friend were seated at a table for two, fairly close to the stage. The stage was not elevated and the musicians stood close to the tables and interacted with the audience in between songs. It made the overall feeling of the concert very laid back and non formal. The restaurant was not very crowded, but of the people that were there there was a wide mix of…
