My childhood growing up in Albania involved the disruption of war and the failing of the Albanian government. I was born during the fall of communism in Albania in 1991. I grow up in a country surrounded by the neighboring war and genocide in Kosovo and the former Yugoslavia. I grow up listening to the news of the genocide that was taking place in the neighboring country of Kosovo. I remember seeing images of men, women, and children being killed daily. Thousands of Albanians from Kosovo were displaced during this time and my family took in one of the many displaced families. I saw first hand what it looks like to lose everything, however horrible their situation was they were full of life and happy to be alive. I didn’t know it at the time…

As I am writing this paper, I am transcended into memories of my childhood as I am climbing, for the second time already, the highest mountain of Albania; Mount Tomor. Why is an 8 year old going through all of this you may ask? This journey is part of a pilgrimage that occurs every year and it symbolizes the virtues…

The "obscure" place I chose to write about is called Fier's Ship House in Albania, and I specifically chose this location because I actually grew up going to this boat a lot with my grandmother. In Albania, you can see around 7 of these boats that have been permanently left on the shallows of the beaches just by walking down the shoreline for 20 minutes. They're very beautiful and big boats, one I specifically remember had carnival rides on it, being so young that one was my favorite so my…
