    The Albedo Effect

Albedo effect is a feedback loop in which an increase in Earth’s temperature causes ice to melt, which means more radiation is absorbed by the Earth’s surface (the white snow/ice reflects radiation of the Sun), leading to further increases in temperature for a warming effect on Earth. The albedo effect that cools the Earth is a negative feedback loop in which a decrease in Earth’s temperature leads to more formation of ice and thus more of the Sun’s radiation is reflected by ice, resulting the decrease in temperature of the Earth again. A black pavement has a low measure of albedo, which means that most of Sun’s radiation is absorbed by its surface. Also, the pavement’s snow is shovelled, meaning that there is less snow than other areas that weren’t shovelled. Thus, less of the Sun’s radiation is reflected by snow because there is no/less snow and the black pavement absorbs most sunlight, causing an increase in temperature of the pavement, which leads to the melting of the snow; and the feedback loop continues. However, on the roof of the cars, the snow wasn’t shovelled or brushed off, and the white snow has a higher measure of albedo (white colour of snow reflects the Sun the most for a cooling effect). This causes a decrease of temperature, causing more ice to form, and more of the Sun’s radiation to be…

Student: I didn’t do so well on the division of fractions assessment. I want to complete a retake tomorrow. Teacher: Tomorrow will work well. Be sure to get a division of fractions remedial sheet from the folder on the counter. The sheet includes important re-teaching points as well as practice problems to help you prepare for the retake. Student (After completing retake assessment): I don’t think I did well because this isn’t the same assessment. The numbers in the problem are different.…

almost no light, making it seem almost entirely pitch black. Astronomers from McGill University, Canada, and the University of Exeter, UK, have measured how much light WASP-12b reflects- its albedo- using the Space Telescope Imaging Spectrograph on the NASA/ESA Hubble Space Telescope. WASP-12b's albedo measured in at 0.064. This amount of light is extremely low. The planet is darker than freshly laid asphalt. The Exoplanet is two times less reflective than our own moon, which has an albedo of…

3,5,6…]. Using a CCF with a binary mask stacks together all spectral lines from the mask identified in the spectra into a single average spectral line, with a S/N increase proportional to the number of lines. Recently, application of the CCF to optical high-resolution spectra of the hot Jupiter 51 Peg b led to a tentative detection of the reflected stellar light from the planetary atmosphere, but the oddly large radius and unexpectedly high albedo derived by Martins et al. raised uncertainty…

    Arctic Ice Project

With Arctic sea ice shrinking at an alarming rate, time is limited to stymie its melting. As our planet heats up, sea ice melts, exposing the ocean. Ice has a high albedo and reflects a significant amount of sunlight, whereas dark ocean water absorbs heat and results in more ice melting. The positive feedback loop created by Earth’s atmosphere warming and melting the sea ice is devastating to the hundreds of millions of people who live in close proximity to the ocean and are suffering from the…

Proterozoic super- continent, might have led to a global glaciation by increasing the sedimentation rate, leading to increased burial of organic matter. This suggestion was motivated by high d13C values of preglacial carbonate rocks, hinting at a link between the glaciations and some tectonically mediated perturbation of the carbon cycle.” Initial cooling allowed snow and ice to accumulate. Continued accumulation of snow and ice would increase the global albedo, Which in turn would…

Moon appear “The Moon illusion” makes the Moon appear larger near the horizon than high up in the sky. This is an optical illusion, various cultures have known this since the ancient times. If you picture the sun, Earth, and Moon in one straight line, at this time one half of the Moon’s surface facing the sun making it illuminated and it is now visible to the eye from earth. This is known as the full Moon. The “New Moon” isn’t visible to the eyes of a human. This happens when the Moon is…

    Snowball Earth Lab Report

Opponents of Snowball Earth claim the model fails to account for temperature changes or a fully functional hydrological cycle, and have found alternative explanations of the characteristics that proponents claim supports the model. Stephen Warren, a professor at the University of Washington, is currently attempting to find data to support the Snowball model by analyzing the albedo, or reflectivity, of different types of ice found in Antarctica; he believes these ice types were found in the…

about one-third have a low orbital inclination of around 2o – these are the “Cold” CKBOs. The remaining two-thirds have a much higher inclination of up to 20o or more – the “Hot” CKBOs. Hot and cold do not have anything to do with temperature here – hot refers to highly inclined orbits. The Hot CKBOs also have a slightly higher eccentricity, and the differences in these parameters may mean some other large object has disturbed their orbits. In addition, the cold group appears to have about three…
