Introduction The opening ceremonies of the 2010 Vancouver Winter Olympics were the focus of media attention on February 12, 2010. The ceremonies brought a wave of excitement and joy for all as countries were brought together in unity to celebrate their love and determination to strive for excellence in winter sports. Not one person could have anticipated the extent to which this same day could bring sadness and grief to the millions of people watching these Olympic events. Nodar Kumaritashvili, a 21 year old Georgian luger, was propelled to his death when he lost control at high speed during his final training run at the Whistler Sliding Centre the morning of the opening ceremonies (Longley, 2010, pp. 1, 4).
