beginning of this short saga; or at least, the beginning of how my vision of the next ten years was born. Ten years ago I was a homeowner in Modesto, California, driving for a company called Viking Transportation. It had recently been purchased by FedEx and were in the process of changing their name to FedEx Freight. I was really happy about the fact that my drive to work was now only twenty-eight miles one way to Stockton every day, instead of the eighty miles I had been traveling to San Jose five days a week when I was a driver for a now defunct air freight forwarding company called Emery Worldwide, a company that had been in business longer than UPS. A combination of events had sealed the fate of Emery. They had a freight plane crash in Rancho Cordova, California in 2000, killing all four crew members onboard. One year later 9/11 occurred and all air traffic was grounded for over a week. Emery was poorly managed and approximately three years later, they shut their doors, forcing me to leave a job that I was positive I would retire from. This in turn led me to FedEx Freight in Stockton. For the first time in years, I actually enjoyed driving a truck again. In fact, I enjoyed it right up to the time in 2006 when I shattered my right wrist at work. I was off work for two years and had to have more than one surgery to have a plate, pins, screws, and anchors put into my forearm. While I was off with my injury, the economy took a serious nosedive, financially devastating…

It was December 18th, seven days until Christmas, and an ordinary day so far in New York City. Amber was on her way to work, shoving her way through the busy streets. Christmas cheer filled the air, lights hung on the rooftops of buildings, stores blasted Christmas songs, and snowflakes danced down from the grey cloudy sky. Amber swung the office door behind her and was greeted by her cheerful employees. The office was decorated with lights and garland hanging around the cubicles, paper…

Christmas Day started out like all the others we have had in the past 5 years. Dillon and I had been on our own, since his oldest brother moved out, and went on to college several years earlier, and Jonathan, the middle son, had joined the Army the year prior. Robert and I just started dating in May of 2010, but he was with us on Christmas morning and my heart was so full, I thought it would surely burst. We opened our gifts, tearing the paper off, just like little children. Christmas is by far…

I think culture is one of the more important aspects of society, if not the most important. Conley, in chapter three, redefined my views on culture and how regulated it is in everyones lives. Conley also writes about the media’s influence in our everyday world and how inclined we are, as a country, to live up to their expectations. “Culture is the sum of the social categories and concepts we recognize in addition to our beliefs, behaviors (except instinctual ones), and practices” (Conley).…

It was a cold bitter night on the 1st of December in 2012. I decided to try out a new hunting spot for the first time. I knew that it was going to be much colder because i did not have any walls around me to protect me from the brutally cold wind. The temperature gauge read a bone chilling 5 degrees, and i knew that it was only going to get worse as the day came to an end. I made sure to wear extra clothes and to dress in layers for the long five hours that I have ahead of me sitting up against…
