Handle With Care Play Analysis

The City Lights Theatre Company presents Handle with Care written by Jason Odell Williams, with Hebrew by Charlotte Cohn , directed by Kit Wilder, created a perfect Jewish Christmas story. The story takes place in a motel room in Goodview, Virginia on Christmas Eve. In the beginning of the play, a young Israeli woman, Ayellet, is arguing in Hebrew with the delivery man, Terrence, who called his childhood friend, Josh, to help him. Ayellet uses her body language to show how she was frantic because Terrence lost her grandmother’s remain that was inside a box. Ayellet exhibits a strong point of view as she tries to communicate through the language barrier using her body language while interacting with the young American man, Josh. Even though I didn’t understand Hebrew, the body language of the bilingual woman and the responses of the English speakers makes it clear. In one of the scene where Ayellet and Josh are left alone, while Terrence is contacting the police. Josh experiences heightened stakes as he tries to calm down the anxious Israeli woman who he just met. In this story, she mostly speaks Hebrew and a little of English. The humor of this story comes from her broken English and the responses from the English speakers. In the beginning, I saw her trying to have a conversation with Josh. It was hilarious when Josh and Terrence tells Ayellet that Terrence lost her grandma on Christmas Eve. One way or another, Ayellet’s body language lets the audience knows that she understood the message and Josh is left to babysit Ayellet. I admire Roneet who speaks her native language fluently, since I was born in American born Chinese I can’t speak my native language very
