Samantha Rooke heads inside a recording studio to explore the elements and emotions that go into producing music. The Mancunian band, Elevator Lady, were busy in the studio this week recording their new EP, which will be available to listen to in the new year. Their lead producer, James Melville, explained, “Normally a band will come into the studio and have a clear idea of what they want their tracks sounding like, just like when Elevator Lady came in today. “Of course, we try to stick to that, however as producers we want what’s best for the band and sometimes that means we change a few ideas when recording to…

It’s not much, with a small living space, and even smaller kitchen. But it’s all we have. I breathe in deep as I think and begin to smell something odd. Reminding me of the thick clouds of exhaust which come from the new-fangled Ford motor cars, speeding down the streets. It’s thick, burning my…

The memory of 126 Riverside Drive will always stay with me. The concrete in front of the apartment overlooking the park is separated into squares and covered in old gum and the occasional chalk doodle. You go up and stand on the single black concrete step and look up at the black marble and the silver 126. You walk in the clear glass door and walk onto the faded tile floor that goes from the bottom of the few lonely stairs through the next door and to the elevator. You feel the cold from the…

The elevator tells me we settled, on the last floor, with a ding, and a screech, elevator doors open. I step out unsteadily. There is only one hallway in the basement, that leads to the only classroom and back to the elevator, or stairs. The classroom is dead ahead. Mr. Fiedler must have let us out really early. I reach the door, it has the body of an oval, with two black windows, but you can’t see anything through them. The door is scorching hot with a massive layer of ash. Scarcely attached…

under my breath as I could feel my ears getting red and hot. The man was wearing a blue buttoned down shirt and had a badge that read “Security.” He turned the paper and sure enough it was my face clearly printed in black and white. “Um that’s actually me,” I said to the man. “Are you sure this is you?” he said. Seriously. “Yup, that’s definitely me.” I assured him. “You’re going to need to come with me now so I can take you to your parents,” he said. As we were walking towards the elevator, he…

He didn’t look happy. “We’ll be there for them when it falls apart.” “Why are you guys so pessimistic about this?” Tony asked, exasperated. “Seriously? You think an inexperienced idealistic guy like Steve should be dating a thousand-year-old alien?” “Whatever happened to love conquers all?” Just then the elevator doors opened and a scowling, tuxedo-clad Steve stalked out. It’s a chilly December day in Cleveland. There are noisy streets, crowded sidewalks, and busy coffee shops filled with customers. I’ve had a long boring day of typing, filing papers, and attending meetings. I finish up my work and start walking down the twelve flights of stairs. Normally the elevator suites me, but from all the sitting I had done today, I thought I needed a little exercise. I get to the main floor, breathing heavily. I open the doors of the tall business building and take a step…
