out, he was already in his final stage. We booked tickets to India and left within a few weeks. Two months later, my grandfather passed away. This was a life changing event for me; it was the first time someone this close to me had passed away and I always wondered if he was diagnosed earlier would he still be here?
A year and a half later my father also got ill. Being the eldest child in my family, I was responsible for taking care of my younger siblings while my parents were at the hospital. Afterwards, when I was in middle school my mom got pregnant with her fourth child and was in bed rest, and when I was in high school she underwent three major surgeries. Both times, my father and I took full responsibility of the house, even when we were moving. It was a rocky period in my life, but I still managed to both take those responsibilities and continue to study and keep my grades up.
Thus began my interest in medicine and science research. I wanted to help people around me so they can live long, healthy lives. Taking biology and chemistry classes at both my high school and Bellevue College, my interest in the sciences continued to rise. Over the summer I was selected for an internship at the Institute for Systems Biology (ISB) where I got to conduct various experiments with Halobacterium salinarum. It was a great experience.
