other diseases have been and medical technology has come a long way. Every decade, new advancements are made, and some are better than others, but they all shape the lives of many people in many different ways. In the 1970s, two life changing surgeries took place. They both occurred in 1972 and they were the world’s first toe-to-thumb transplant and also the first cochlear device implantation. The fingerless man was living in San Francisco and he was a firefighter there. He was performed on by plastic surgeon, Harry J. Buncke, M.D. (“100 Years of Surgical Quality Improvement”). Harry J. Buncke is known as “The Father of Microsurgery.” Dr. Buncke started practicing toe-to-thumb transplants on a species of monkey called rhesus macaque or the rhesus monkey (Harry J. Buncke, M.D. Father of Microsurgery). This is an advancement in medical history because it allowed patients who had lost their thumb the opportunity to live a more normal life. The first cochlear device was implanted into Graham Carrick by William F. House, M.D. (“100 Years of Surgical Quality Improvement”). Dr. House was the creator of the cochlear device, which was surgically implanted into the skin behind the patient’s ear. This device was a major advancement since it allowed the deaf to finally hear. It could do this by “directly stimulating the auditory nerve” (NIDCD). The 1980s had many advancements compared to the 1970s. These advancements include an implantable cardioverter-defibrillator,…
one experiment researchers McFarland, Roebuck, Yan, Majolo, Li, and Guo (2013) discovered that primates had a sense of self respect and respect for others in their community. The primates studied were willing to sacrifice a reward just to view the face of the dominant male but expect more reward if they were to view the face of a subordinate. They knew their ranking and had a sense even when just viewing an image of the dominant or subordinate where they belonged in the hierarchy. Eye contact…
desire to try and survive together, it was the environment they were in that ultimately turned them into savages. In chapter six of Opening Skinner 's Box, "Monkey Love" Lauren Slater introduced us to Harry Harlow, who was greatly known for experimenting with rhesus macaque monkeys and the way they expressed their feelings in regards to attachment (Slater 132). Slater explains the emotional indifference Harlow felt in relation to the monkeys. Harlow only cared to prove that he was to be the…
for support when they’re in a stressful or scary situation. Modeling is the process of observing and imitating a specific behavior which is also very influential. We learn by imitating even when we don 't mean to. To illustrate this, McLeod, S. explains in his article on nature versus nurture,”when an infant forms an attachment it is responding to the love and attention it has received, language comes from imitating the speech of others and cognitive development depends on the degree of…
genetically similar to humans could help find cures to various diseases. However, there are many previous examples show that medicines display no negative effects on animals, yet have detrimental effects on humans’ body. The belief of the advantages of medical research continues to be spread. Rhesus macaques are one of the most common animals used in medical experiments as their genetic sequences are highly similar to humans. From a general perspective, it might be argued that medical research…
anyone realize, there is another way we could conduct tests that do not harm animals in the slightest. No animals should be tested on because although a few studies have shown to help humans, the tests are very harmful to animals when there are other ways to test products. Should animals be used for biomedical research? In the article, “Animal Testing and Its Gifts to Humans” (April, 2015), written by Frankie Trull at the Wall Street Journal, it is argued that animal testing is necessary in the…
For starters, animals should only be used for serious health conditions. The NIH committee encourages scientist to continue using chimps to find a vaccine for hepatitis C virus (NIH). Also, according to The Independent Newspaper, using animals will benefit tremendously for diseases like Parkinson’s and Alzheimer’s. Wall Street Journal writer, Frankie L. Trull, confirms that “Patients with aggressive brain tumors finally have a reason for hope. Thanks to the work of scientist and physicians at…
chapter six Monkey Love, Harry Harlow experiment on monkeys to demonstrate the psychology of attachment. Harry was doing research on monkeys heart and head. While he was doing these research he realized that the infant macaques were separated from their mothers. The infant macaques got attached to terry cloth towels, they loved these towels. This is when Harlow questioned why the infant monkeys had an attachment to the towel. Harlow decided to experiment on these monkeys. He would take them…
pointing towards the cruelness of animal testing and how it shouldn’t exist anymore and shouldn’t have existed in the first place. In another perspective, animal experimentation is vital to the survival of humanity. “Activists calling for the elimination of animal studies. Those who doubt this value need only look at the faces of patients in the Duke Trial whose lives have been saved by these essential research techniques.” (Trull, Paragraph #14) A biomedical research association stated that…
livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground” (Genesis 1: 26). Even though as humans we have more capabilities than animals, I must disagree with the position of utilizing God’s word in defense of torturing animals. For instance, it has been discovered that, “in research and testing, animals are subjected to experiments that can include everything from testing new drugs to infecting with diseases, poisoning for toxicity testing, burning skin, causing…
