Dysentery and other communicable disease will wipe out a large portion of the American Army. Solders would leave to go home and plant or harvest their crops. The militia is based on volunteers; many feel this means serving is optional. George Washington is a member of the minority, he is independently wealthy, and able to have someone at home who can take care of things while he is away. The average solider does not.
