To keep track of the social change in Taiwan, the survey repeats collecting data with almost the same modules each five years. In this study, since it covers the scale for common mental disorders, and both family relationships and social relationships, the data from the 2010 TSCS will be used to analyze the relationship between social relationships and common mental disorders. Also, it is the most recent available data including the variables of interest in this paper in Taiwan. As for the sample size, only one case was missing on all the questions used in this study, therefore, by estimating missing values using full information maximum likelihood function (FIML) in Mplus, 1,895 cases enters the final analysis. Variables Common Mental Disorders The 12-item Chinese Health Questionnaire for common mental disorders is a revision for the purpose of cultural differences of the British General Health Questionnaire. This questionnaire was administered in the TSCS starting from 1990 to capture the morbidity of light psychiatric disorders in Taiwanese communities (Cheng and Williams 1985; Fu et al. 2012).
