Guttmann Scale

My dependent variable will be their perception of their latest relationship. To measure this, I will be using a Guttmann scale. This will enable me to incorporate both a dichotomous scale and a Likert scale. A dichotomous scale is when a question has two possible responses. A Likert scale is a type of rating scale that measures how someone feels about a certain topic containing degrees of feeling. With multiple Likert questions in a survey Cronbach’s alpha helps measure its reliability. Cronbach’s alpha is computed by correlating the score for each scale item with the total score for each observation, and then comparing that to the variance for all individual item scores. The survey will measure perceptions of relationship status with an ordinal …show more content…
I am also considering control variables that include gender, socioeconomic status, education, and treatment. Based on Hunt et al’s (2001) article control variables that were considered are education, treatment, and gender. The impact of ADHD can disrupt how one learns, effecting education, and while pharmacological treatment has demonstrated improvements in work, hyperactivity, and attention its side effects, that range from chronic multiple tics to anorexia, can also contribute to relationship dilemmas revolving around mental health issues. On the other hand, hyperactivity is more frequent in boys with ADHD while disorganization and distractibility are more persistent with women ADHD sufferers (Michielsen, 2013). These different symptoms among gender, along with the already different social expectations related to gender, can alter one’s perception of what normal social functioning is and can contribute to stress if they believe they are breaking social norms; “It has been suggested that ADHD behaviors impede females more than males from fulfilling gender–role expectations placed on them by modern Western society” (Robin, 2002). The last social variable taken into consideration is socioeconomic status (SES), which is strongly tied to education and treatment. The higher SES an individual has the more access to resources, to better educate themselves or seek treatment. The lower the SES of the individual the more likely their ADHD worsens as they lack the …show more content…
This study is cross-sectional, a research tool used to capture information based on data gathered for a specific point in time. The data gathered is from individuals diagnosed with ADHD that previously or are currently in a relationship. Advantages of a cross-sectional study include that it is not costly because it does not require a lot of time, it captures a specific point in time, and it contains multiples variables at the time of the data snapshot. However, there are also disadvantages of a cross-sectional study such as it does not determine cause and effect, it cannot be used to analyzed behavior over a period of time, and findings can be flawed if there is a conflict of interest with the funding source. Since a cross-sectional study allows different variables at the same time, in relation to ADHD and perceived relationship quality, to be compared with little cost it seems more practical to choose it over a longitudinal study. I will also be taking an inductive approach to my research. After the collection of data, it is examined for patterns that may assist in developing a theory that could explain those patterns. The target population of my sample is clear, individuals with ADHD that have experienced a relationship. However, since my research is more so exploratory the best approach for this population would be convenience sampling. Convenience sampling is a nonprobability method often used during preliminary research efforts to get a gross

Socioeconomic status refers to an individual’s ability to produce and consume resources (Landsbergis, Grzywacz, & LaMontagne, 2014). It is one of the most important determinants of health and is associated with access to material resources, such as adequate housing, safe neighborhoods, healthy food, clean water, clean air, educational opportunities, and control over ones work (Symbaluk & Bereska, 2016). A lack of these material resources can have a direct or indirect impact on ones health and illness. Socioeconomic status affects an individual’s health and illness through job security, adequate nutritious diet, and has an impact on lifestyle behaviors. Lower socioeconomic status is consistently linked with job insecurity (Landsbergis et al., 2014).…

Unit 2 Clinical Journal Attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is one of the familiar developmental and childhood disorders learned in this unit. As a neurological-psychiatric disorder, ADHD is manifested by a continual display of reduced attention and/or intensified hyperactivity or impulsivity that interferes with the performance of the daily activities of people across the life span. Even though, reduce attention, intensified hyperactivity and impulsivity are the main attributes of ADHD, some patients may have difficulty with one of the behaviors. However, some people may have issues with inattentiveness and distractibility unlike the patients with ADHD; these conducts occur more often with increased severity, thereby changing the way they function in school, job and the community at large (Sadock, Sadock, & Ruiz, 2014).…

In the past the role of the Registered Nurse (RN) was misunderstood and wasted within the primary care setting (Oelke, Besner and Carter, 2014). The Department of Health and Children (2001b) suggests that role of the nurse in the primary care setting is to provide first-level contact that can be accessed by all members of the community via self-referral and to improve their health and social well being while trying to keep patients within their community and their own homes. World Health Organisation (WHO) Declaration of Alma Ata (1978) states that a RN’s role within the community encompasses the assessment of an individual’s needs as well as looking at the wider community needs by using the social determinants of health diagram and creating…

The purpose of the study was to determine whether a home-based activity program known as the Tailored Activity Program; (TAP-VA), as compared to a control group, could decrease the severity of behavioral symptoms among veterans with dementia. Additionally, the study wanted to explore how the TAP-VA may also affect caregiver burden, client's functional decline, and the time that a caregiver spends caring for the client. This study was a parallel, randomized control trial which falls under a level I of evidence. Also this study was single blind as the interviewer who assessed the participants over the course of the study was not aware of which participants were split among the two groups. The study was conducted over the span of eight months, with interviewers assessing…

Relationships contribute to a children’s immediate happiness and may be important to their long-term development (“ADHD and Peer Relationships,”2009). Children with ADHD find it hard to establish meaningful relationships. Problems associated with ADHD causes others to view people differently and eventually alienate the child. Inattentive children sometimes are shy or are withdrawn. Children that are impulsive and/or hyperactive generally are rejected by their peers because they have problems waiting their turn or act aggressively (“ADHD and Peer Relationships,”2009).…

Corretti The University of Texas at Dallas Narcissism and Zero-Acquaintance Relationship Development Close relationship formation and maintenance is a major aspect of social interaction. Developing new friendships offers benefits like a reduction in loneliness and an increase in social support, whereas a failure to maintain positive relationships can leave people feeling lonely and without support. Individual differences are commonly predictors of relationship functioning (e.g., Malouff, Thorsteinsson, Schutte, Bhullar, & Rooke, 2010).…

Sociocultural and behavioral determinants of health are defined as factors that play a role in one’s health that go beyond the levels of individual choice. Sociocultural determinants may include the neighborhood in which one lives in, gender, socioeconomic status, education level, etc (Wilkinson, 2003). Behavioral determinants of health are often influenced by one’s social environment and are actions that influence one’s health. These determinants can affect the type of nutrition and food access that are available to the elderly population in rural areas.…

Many studies have taken place on whether Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder (ADHD) is an actually disorder or not. Although many have been diagnosed with ADHD and we have science and evidence to back it up many people still believe that ADHD is not a disorder. ADHD is very prominent in todays children. “Approximately 2 million children in the united states have ADHD…that means in a classroom of 25 to 30 children its is likely that 1 student will have ADHD (Gantt and Slife, 2006, p. 3.)” ADHD being the controversial topic because there are may competing theories on whether ADHD is just a natural occurring behavior in which some have a higher functioning of the disorder and others have it lower.…

found that students who were poor but had high instances of interactions with their mothers reading to them performed higher on their math and reading tests. A study by Howe, Lawlor, and Propper (2012) revealed that females showed the greatest differences in health and behaviors when measured against the mother’s educational status. Higher maternal education resulted in taller height and lower body mass index (Howe, 2012). Higher maternal education was associated with lower behavior problems. However, Howe, Lawlor, and Propper (2012) found that there was no difference between socioeconomic inequalities and emotional problems and health inequalities presented by higher maternal education lowered over the course of childhood.…

After visiting Children’s Hospital Los Angeles (CHLA) for a global workforce panel, the work of Dr. Douglas Vanderbilt plagued my mind. Dr. Vanderbilt is a Developmental-Behavioral Pediatrician, who uses the everyday community around him as probable cause in diagnosing his patients. Furthermore, he utilizes the idea that environmental and physical events in life can have an adverse affect on child health. After some research I came to find that the latter is true, and one of the biggest factors that can plague childhood health is socioeconomic status (SES). SES can often affect disease or mortality rates in children through a range of underlying mechanisms, included but not limited to; education, income, and occupation.…

ADHD can be a difficult disorder to live with for people who have this diagnosis, this can even impact the people who interact with these individuals every day. Families can have the largest impact and it can affect their way of life in many different ways especially in young children and adolescent’s school settings. “Attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is associated with poor grades, poor reading and math standardized test scores, and increased grade retention. ADHD is also associated with increased use of school-based services, increased rates of detention and expulsion, and ultimately with relatively low rates of high school graduation and postsecondary education,” says the Academic and Educational Outcomes of Children with…
