In private schools these relate to nursery, pre-preparatory, preparatory, and public. Within the state education system key stages are followed, from 1-4, setting guidelines for the education knowledge expected of pupils at various ages. State schools are government funded and owned by the Local Education Authority. The schools are majority run by a board of governors. They are comprehensive and accept children from all academic abilities and take boys and girls.
