Introduction The modern French horn has seen numerous developmental stages over centuries of evolution. Each stage of the development of the French horn expanded the musical potential of the instrument and provided composers with the opportunities to experiment with new musical possibilities. As the technologies of the horn expanded, becoming more complex and sophisticated, compositions for the French horn followed suit. The research question that this discussion focuses around is "How have…
During my ongoing business conference to Colorado to learn about future career opportunities for my dual degrees in Communication design and Computer Science, I got to attend an orchestra concert presented by the Hapless Heroes who were conducted by Leslie Stewart. The show was musical theatre where they had a live orchestra playing in front of the stage while the actors explained the Greek tale of Orpheus and Eurydice. I attended this amazing show on the 4th of December. I love learning about…
“The rich people not only had all the money, they had all the chance to get more; they had all the know-ledge and the power, and so the poor man was down, and he had to stay down.” One of the main characteristics of the jungle is that the powerful (the rich) is powerful thanks to the weak (the poor); the law of the jungle, the law of the strongest. Upton Sinclair calls “The Jungle” the socio-economic reality that the city of Chicago is going through at the beginning of the 20th century. In the…
The piece opens with a long low somewhat ominous blowing in the woodwind section. The string section accompanies the woodwind, building the shadowy dark tension. Gradually this sound builds and builds into a great rumbling crescendo. The music then gallops off from there into a cheerful frenzy that rises and falls like dancers in a colorful dance. It is played predominantly by the strings along with woodwind. The feeling is light and happy. A slight rolling in the percussion builds excitement.…
Orchestra. A harmonious branch of music where melodies flow from the hollow bodies of violins, violas, cellos, and basses. A thin wooden baton is swung wildly, conducting dramatic notes from famous compositions. Tunes fill the room as hopping heels and tapping toes go “Thump” Thump” “Thump”. Heads bob and torsos sway in unison, like puppets bound to dancing strings that were hung by the conductor. I made a rotten decision. I had no doubt about it when I clicked open my sister’s text. “Did you…
The trumpet is an instrument that many ensembles use for its versatility. A composer may write for a bright, high sound for the new salsa chart, or a composer may choose to write for a warm, dark orchestral composition. This opportunity would not be this accessible without the help of three individuals, Joseph Haydn, Johann Nepomuk Hummel, and Anton Weidinger. Their influence on changing the trumpet greatly changed the future of the instrument and the music. The instrument was revolutionize, as…
The novel The Jungle was written in 1906 by an American journalist and novelist, Upton Sinclair. Sinclair wrote The Jungle to represent the harsh conditions and difficult lives of immigrants in the United States in Chicago Illinois and other industrialized cities. The novel is set in the early 1900’s when industrialization had reached the United States. It was also a time immigrant population started soaring. The reason behind this was that many foreigners believed that America was the land of…
I aimed at Americas heart, and by accident I hit it in the stomach. This statement, attributed to writer Upton Sinclair, is in reference to Sinclairs novel, The Jungle. The Jungle, written in the early twentieth century, depicts the horrors and corruption of the cities and its industries. Specifically, the novel is aimed at putting down the meat packaging industry. The novel's title symbolizes the competitive nature of the city; the world of Packingtown, the place where the protagonist, Jurgis,…
This past weekend, I had the pleasure of attending the Artist-Faculty Recital Series at the Fairchild Theatre on MSU 's Campus. The concert featured a multitude of pieces ranging from the Baroque and Classical music periods to modern day compositions. Several of the pieces were played in a piano-trombone basso continuo and the last piece was played by a trombone choir with two featured soloists. Going into the concert I did not know what to expect. I had listened to classical music in my MUS…
