Personal Narrative Essay On The Orchestra

Orchestra. A harmonious branch of music where melodies flow from the hollow bodies of violins, violas, cellos, and basses. A thin wooden baton is swung wildly, conducting dramatic notes from famous compositions. Tunes fill the room as hopping heels and tapping toes go “Thump” Thump” “Thump”. Heads bob and torsos sway in unison, like puppets bound to dancing strings that were hung by the conductor. I made a rotten decision. I had no doubt about it when I clicked open my sister’s text.
“Did you try out?“ I sighed. “Yes, I did”, I thought as I watched Mr. Hudson spread clear tape onto white paper and slap it to the door. My breath came out in gasps as my golden-brown eyes scanned the eight inch by ten inch sheet of paper. “Symphony Orchestra 2015-2016 Rooster” it read. I was about to read the news I had been insanely worried about. My sister’s and my own name would be under “Cello”. I was so nervous that the text blurred and I had to read one letter at a time. A giant frown spread from my face to my stomach when I noticed that there was only one Miss Giles on the list. My heart sprinted a mile as my eyes flickered over the sickly familiar K-E-L-L-Y.

I thought of it as an exciting hour of ABCDEFG and charming music--It was my escape from reality. I would practice everyday, strumming my favorite songs. I was extremely excited to be in symphony orchestra, the EXCLUSIVE, tippety top orchestra class at East Kentwood High School. I restlessly waited for the day the man behind the baton would announce try-outs. When that day came, my hand shot up the exact second “symphony” popped out of the teacher’s mouth. The moment I got home from school that day, I was rehearsing and preparing myself for auditions. Little did I know that I wasn’t allowed to try

And although I could not distinguish the end of one work and another, of this if I knew when it would end as it was as there came a time when everything sounded very strong, very powerful and suddenly stopped. It was really good. Many of these instruments, except for those that are continuous, which are almost always present, are reserved for specific times of the work highlighting certain expressive or symbolic aspects. The transmission of emotions is organized through the theory of emotions and rhetoric, transferring concepts of traditional speech to the composition of the musical discourse, because its purpose is to strengthen the transmission of meaning and…

If I have not challenged myself to practice and to confront challenges, I could not have become the principal player in our school’s jazz band and wind ensemble. After several breakthroughs, I decided to share my inspirations to the younger generation. This year, I am one of the coordinators of the Molding Musicians program supported by the Cypress Boys and Girls Club, teaching the fifth and sixth graders how to play an instrument. I appreciate the fact that my achievements did not come from an easy work, but rather a persistent standing against…

Music is the universal language, and my duty as a devoted violinist is to convey my message of passion through every bow stroke. Whenever I participate in an ensemble, whether it be the SCHS Chamber Orchestra or YOPW’s Youth Symphony Orchestra, I enter into a haven in which the excess worries of everyday life wither away, and all that stands is the music before me. With the chance to exhibit and further develop my leadership skills as section leader and assistant concert mistress, I set the example for my fellow musicians by expressing true musicianship to fulfill my duty to the ensemble and execute a successful performance. Life is an orchestrated ensemble composed of varying styles and ever-changing tempos, and I believe that my ability…

The Saturday symphony begins as electric mixers hum and speakers pulse. The rapid succession of thuds signal the conductors below, informing them that the final instrumentalists are awake and ready to play their part. Three children emerge from the stairs hauling pencils, pastels, and sketch paper, littering the living room floor as new masterpieces are planned and executed. Music from microphones fill the rooms with my mother's soulful singing while graphite and stationary collide to become art. The kitchen bustles with the whirring and whizzing of batter being baked by my father.…

The screeching of my violin echoed off the wall as I struggled to play Mendelssohn's concerto in E minor. The double stops that were meant to flow in harmony came out in a jumbled mass of notes indistinguishable from the shriek of a dying cow. I whimpered as these terrible sounds emitted out of my violin, and threw my violin down in defeat. I slowly tilted my head towards the clock, a terrifying reminder that my addition was only 10 min away. I gathered up my music, and ambled away from the empty practice room to where my judge would listen to my audition.…

Subject: JC Orchestra Dilemma I regret to inform you, Mr. Pirotta, that due to time-scarcity, I won’t be able to play the piano in the JC Orchestra as part of the ensemble. That is, except the Harry Potter piece. Unfortunately, I am still getting used to my timetable and need ample time to continue composing, reading philosophical tomes and building my solo repertoire. Also, to be sovereign over my time, I am unable to maintain regular rehearsal schedules.…

It was the second week middle school when my band teacher had asked for me to stay after class: “Rachel you should think about quitting the band.” At that moment, I had felt my mind go blank; I was devastated. I had always known I was a bit behind in learning the notes and developing the sound of my tone; however, I had never once thought about quitting band. I loved music; just turning on the radio brightened my mood. I felt impatient in my other classes, waiting until I could go and pick up my instrument.…

Different moments of our lives change us and shape us into the man or woman whom one day we will become. One moment that changed me was when I got my first instrument. Getting my first instrument was exciting, yet challenging at the same time. When I told my mom that I wanted to start playing music, I didn’t realize how hard it can truly be. I didn’t think of how much patience and time I would need to put into my practicing.…

From freshman to junior year, I led an ensemble in the Richmond Symphony Youth Orchestra program, a premier orchestral training program that promotes continued development of individual instrumental skills, while introducing students to the joys of ensemble playing and serving the community. As the principal player, I learned what it meant to lead the whole orchestra. I was responsible for coordinating the strings, communicating with other section leaders and the conductor, demonstrations, tuning the orchestra, and more. But most importantly, this position taught me to set a good example of musicianship and leadership for both the conductor and ensemble during both rehearsals and performances. This musical experience taught me the importance…

In an ever changing world, there are some things that will forever seem to be the same; the sky has been and shall be blue, people have and will constantly fall in and out of love, the fear of the unknown has been experienced by many, and many more will experience such a feeling, and an orchestra has always been seated that way it has - string instruments in the front with brass, woodwinds, and percussion in the back. Various things that function in a certain way, and continue to function in that certain way, grow to become the norm accepted by many over the years that pass. We get so used to the way everyday things work, that if they were to change, it would be so drastic and result in a sense of unconformity in many. According to Courtney…

When I was younger, in the sixth grade, I started piano because my parents had forced me. When I first went into the piano class, I was very intimidated by the older kids because they were in middle school while I was still in elementary school and they were also experienced. I had no experience whatsoever and the piano instructor, Mr. Hayward announced that the piano recital will be in five weeks. I was panicking and shocked at the same time. I also had a lot smaller hands than my peers, making it a lot harder for me to do chords continuously without my hands getting strained and tired.…

On Thursday, September 29th at 7:30pm I attended the LU Symphony Orchestra Concert in Towns Auditorium. Prior to the concert beginning, I noticed a wide variety of instruments on the stage. There were some instruments that I did not know the name of but for the most part, I knew a large majority of the string, woodwind and brass instruments presented. The last time that I went to a symphony was when I was in elementary school, so attending an orchestral concert in college was a much different experience. I was fascinated by the diversity of instruments.…

Part of me knew that I was being irrational, that I was silly, but another, louder and more childish part of me, insisted that I keep them. They were not anything special, just thin strips of blue electrical tape and truth be told I never used them anyway. These thin strips of tape were used by beginner students to learn where to put their fingers on the string to play the notes. Even though everyone else, even those less practiced than I, had abandoned the blue tape that I still clung to them for months.…
