Ringing bells in a church is more than just pulling a rope and hearing the chiming of the bells. Bells have been around since ancient times. They announced the beginning of church services, deaths, marriages and many other important events of a village. Over the years the practice of change ringing evolved. Change ringing is the process of ringing a set of bells in a controlled manner. A change ringer spends many hours learning the special technique on how to generate the changes sound instructed by the conductor. This varies on the maturity and overall understanding of change ringing. The origin of change ringing began in England in the seventeenth century. This came after many churches began to put bells back in their towers after a ban. The first Society of Bellringers was formed in 1637. Many of the melodies played then are still played today. Change ringing really took off with the publication of the book “Tintinnalogia - the Art of Ringing.” The majority of the change ringing bells can be found in England. Of the 6,100 churches in the world with change ringing bells 93% of those churches are in England. The majority of the other countries in the world that practice change ringing were once colonized by the British. The first of change ringing bells made their way to America in 1745. They were installed in the Old North Church in Boston, Massachusetts. This set consisted of eight bells ranging in weight from 600lbs-1,680lbs. One of the original change…
