This is my first journal entry and I was asked to give my opinion on the topic of diversity and what the U.S. demographics would look like in 2050. But first, I would like to honor the names of the people, who lost their lives at Mother Emanuel AME Church: Cynthia Hurd, Sharonda Singleton, Myra Thompson, Tywanza Sanders, The Rev. DePayne Middleton-Doctor, Susie Jackson, Ethel Lance, Daniel Simmons, and especially, the inspirational Reverend Clementa Pinckney (Perkins, Huntsberry, & Chappell,…
Living life with a job based on race or ethnicity can affect people's perspective of the United States being a ¨free country.¨ A quota in the civil servant occupations can create a peace within other races or ethnicities. Diversity is good for the community and workplace as it helps define the culture. People are all equal when it comes to the hiring process for certain jobs. Today, if someone were to get a job, the odds of being qualified for the job are low because of their race or ethnicity,…
and Corruption. People are often basing their knowledge of Africa upon racial stereotypes. The media is a dominant force in swaying our perspective and opinion on Africa. Why do we think of Africa as one country, one culture, one climate and no diversity? This shows the lack of knowledge we have on Africa, as a nation. We would not say Europe is one country or Asia, yet why is Africa portrayed in this way? Take the example of Ebola…
While spending my time in the Pittsburgh class at Loreto, I felt that I could quickly relate to the setting. I grew up in an elementary school that was quite similar in ethnic backgrounds and gender breakdowns. The class consisted of 19 children; 10 boys and 9 girls. Among those students were six children who were ethnically diverse. Four children are Arabic; one child is from Uzbek, one child from Nepal, and two African American. This shows that 42% of the children are ethnically diverse. Aside…
Our society is everchanging and the world in which our children live today is significantly different from previous generations. Our student population is becoming more diverse than ever, and we are seeing many more English as a Second Language (ESL) students and students with diverse cultural backgrounds enter our classroom. Moreover, society is becoming more and more technology driven meaning we communicate and access information via a range of literacy resources including computers, smart…
facing large families is that people who would not like each other by any other means are put in a situation where they have to love and look out for each other. Furthermore, we are all so diverse and forced to live with one another and accept that diversity. On tv shows, brothers and sisters look different due to the fact that they are played by actors, but they act very similar because each and every word they say is scripted. In reality, siblings look the same, but harbor different personas…
Bhutanese, 400 Turks along with people of other ethnic groups have been infusing the city with great a diversity. Currently, total of 36 different languages are being spoken in the Scranton School District (Scranton Journal). In terms of healthcare, between, 2010-2014, 12% of the population under the age of 65 had a disability and 15% of the population was uninsured (U.S. Census). With the increasing diversity healthcare administrators face a huge problem due to language barrier as about 15% of…
while going through an emotional, physical, and psychological battle within. Growing up in New York City, played a huge role when it came to dealing with my self-identity and other adolescent issues because it’s rough living there. You see some much diversity going on but not enough acceptance with these communities that you encounter. For example; my friends and I were walking to school one day when this man said to me, “that the only thing that’s holding him back from assaulting my gay behind…
Privilege, a priceless intangible notion that has categorized individuals as those who have and have not. Being a student at Marquette University has made this problem more evident to me on a day to day basis. Along with being a student, I am also categorized as a minority which in this school means segregation. This in one of the biggest problems that plague the campus because those who are not experiencing this problem, often times believe that it is nonexistent. In reality, racism roams…
