Many jobs are capable of having any gender or ethnicity. The most common jobs that are popular for women are blue collar jobs such as firefighters, engineers, or truck drivers. Men chooses not to work at jobs dominated by women because those jobs are usually low paying (Miller). Paquette says, “Most females are starting to become truck drivers because the older drivers are starting to retire.” It is rare to see men pursue in pink collar careers such as a nurse, veterinarian, or social workers. Since most of the jobs are starting to expand, there can be more job opportunities to pursue. During the Great Recession, any gender or ethnicity was struggling to get a job no matter who they were. African Americans and Hispanics were affected more to unemployment than other groups (Hout). Whites were not as affected by the recession because their wealth overtook other races. Hout also says, “Over the course of the 1980’s, 18.1% of the labor force was unemployed.” There is a lower representation of women doing hands on jobs than being involved with infants or working in a office. Men want a reputation of being strong and tough, not empathetic or giving. No one wants be known as a male nurse because nurses are known for being majority female or unless they have an interest in caring for people in need. Both genders are capable of doing the same jobs in different positions for any companies. As long as someone is enjoying their job, they can continue doing what they like to do.
