Personal Objectives
1. I will be able to develop confidence in performing nursing/clinical tasks by receiving beneficial feedbacks from my preceptors and the staff in the pediatrics and NICU units.

- I achieved this objective by having a lot of opportunities in this clinical practicum to improve my nursing skills and learn how to handle challenging situations. I was able to shadow a mother and baby RN. I was able to take newborn vitals, feed newborns, change diapers, learn how to give newborn a bath, learn how to do newborn hearing screening, and learn how to properly care for a perineal tear. At the beginning, I was really nervous to perform some of the tasks because I felt that I might hurt the newborn since they are very tiny and fragile.

I audited patient charts to determine whether or not the current nursing staff followed the new glucose gel protocol and whether or not the neonates’ glucose levels are corrected prior to being discharged. Then, I analyzed the data that I collected. To increase the nursing staff’s compliance with the use of the glucose gel in correcting hypoglycemia, my preceptors and I developed an online learning module on the new glucose gel protocol. In addition, there’s a pre-test for the current and new nursing staff to complete before they start the online learning module. After the completion of the online learning module, they will also complete a post-test. The pre-test and post-test evaluation is an effective tool to utilize in accessing the nursing staff knowledge before and after the completion of the online learning module. In the future, my preceptors or others can continue to audit charts to determine whether or not the online learning module increases the nursing staff’s compliance with the use of the glucose

I’ve always enjoyed working with children and the medical aspect of it has always intrigued me as well. Here is why I want to major in nursing.…

During my attendance to the Seattle Children’s Hospital Nursing Camp, I job shadowed multiple Registered Nurses in the Cancer Care Unit, Medical Floor, Operating Room, and Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. In each department, I was able to observe the daily tasks of a nurse and how they interact with different patients. Not only did I job shadow nurses, but I also learned how to different procedures, such as: how to replace a trachea device, take blood pressures, insert feeding tubes, and how to inject vitamins and foods into feeding tubes. If a nursing intervention follows the nursing process, e.g., assess, diagnose, plan, implement, and evaluate – it demonstrates the clinical reasoning that supports the patient care. As cited by Alfaro-Lefevre (2012) Skip the principles of assessment and diagnosis and it’s easy to jump to conclusions, miss risks, and give care based on assumptions rather than evidence. Assessment errors and omissions are a major cause of adverse outcomes. If you fail to plan before implementation, the risk of adverse outcomes also increases. Skip evaluation, and reflective nursing practice (not to mention patient safety) goes out the door (p. 1).…

Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. Every assignment I completed, conversation I had, and person I met, has transformed me into a more educated and open minded student.…

The current standard for patient education is at least one time per day (DCH intranet). Hospitals are constantly under the real threat of receiving audits, and those not meeting standards are at risk of not being reimbursed for their treatment. Consequently, it is imperative that nurses and other healthcare providers not only practice primary prevention through patient education but also document the extent of the education provided. This would give the patient the best chance at avoiding acute illness and the hospital the best chance of receiving reimbursements. It appears, however, that nurses are either not providing patients with education or that the nurses are not documenting the instances in which they…

For the disability ministry project, we were asked to choose a practicum experience where we shadowed or spoke to someone helping someone with a disability. For my project I chose to spend some time in the class for disabled children at the high school I graduated from. Throughout the glimpse of time that was allotted for this particular practicum experience I learned a lot of exciting things about disabilities, but also made some disconcerting revelations. While spending the day at school I was able to interact with the students, teachers, and overall staff of the high school; gaining insights, perspectives, and forming thoughts on everything I had witnessed. From start to finish, my day back at school has left a lasting impression on me.…

As we know that there is a relationship between research and practice it is imperative that nurses know what research qualifies any method that they have to put into practice In order to individualize patients’ needs instead of generalize care.
