My goal after completing the BSN program at UST Carol and Odis Peavy School of Nursing is to work in the Medical Center. I want to help make a difference in as many individual lives that I can. I started volunteered at Texas Children’s before getting accepted into the nursing program. Volunteering was an unbelievable experience to be able to work and learn from the nurses. I tried to make a difference in each patient’s life that I encounter. Seeing how hard nurses work, the dedicated long hours and how committed they are makes me determined this is the right career for me. I can say that volunteering was a rewarding experience. I loved being able to interact with the children the most. Knowing that I could brighten a child’s face just by making

Nursing is a career that is both rewarding and challenging. My passion to study nursing first began when I started working as a Home Care Assistant after studying Health and Social Care at College. My second job was working alongside nurses in Hospital, as an Agency Healthcare Assistant. This experience has influenced my career decision greatly; this is as it has allowed me to develop a strong insight to the challenges and constraints that come with the satisfying and rewarding role of a nurse. I aspire to gain professional experience in the field of nursing, because of personal experiences that have led me to select this career. My passion for care-taking within the nursing realm stems from a passion at young age to render aid and experiences very dear to my heart. My care-taking skills began while I was caring for children at church, as an assistant to both the Children’s and Youth Department. When a child would arrive ill, I would make sure that little contact was made with other children to contain the illness. I also made sure the child would wash their hands thoroughly before consuming meals and would take an additional precaution of washing down tables and toys to diminish the spread of germs.…

First off, my short term goals and objectives are to obtain my nursing degree and to work as nurse in the surgery department and or the labor and delivery department. As I work as a nurse I will also be working on achieving my long term goals of obtaining my BSN, then an advanced degree as a RNFA specializing as a surgical nurse. Also, a hobby of mine is volunteering for Habitat for Humanity. I enjoy traveling to other countries whom don’t necessarily have the resources that we have and I enjoy helping them. My last trip with Habitat for Humanity was to Brazil and we rebuilt houses for the locals, bringing their homes up to standards that would be considered more safe and more sanitary.…

When people ask me why I am interested in nursing, my thoughts always return to my late father. I was his caregiver for eight months while he battled with lung cancer. During his hospital visits and treatment we encountered many different nurses. Some of the most memorable were the hospice nurses that cared for him during his last days. My feeling at that time was that it takes a special kind of person to be a hospice nurse.…

As a Nurse there are several ways to address social determinants of health and contribute to the mission of the NURSE Corps Scholarship, which is; “…to improve health and achieve health equality through access to quality service, a skilled health workforce and innovative programs”. My contribution to this mission will be directly through a high level of patient care and indirectly by supporting organizations or coalitions that not only provide care to the medically underserved, but also, support policies which support underserved communities. The dedication of my time in a community with a critical shortage of nurses, as well as, focusing on care for those who are underserved is my primary contribution to the Nurse Corps mission. Patient care…

For five years, I went to the Boys and Girls Club during the summer, and once a week we would visit the retirement homes to play bingo and conversate with the elderly residents. Unlike many of the other kids, I was more fascinated with watching the interaction between the nurses and their patients rather than playing games. I watched as the nurses would walk over to patients, adjust their blankets, and pillows as they showed so much compassion. I remember that day so vividly watching the nurses care for others so generously as if it was first nature and I looked at them with the utmost respect. Since that day, I have aspired to be a nurse and to care for others because, at the end of the day, that could be me, or a loved one, you never know…

My Personal Goal Statement Every day I wake up, I ask myself how I can make a difference. This question has helped shape my personal values and principles and directed my path into the nursing field. Growing up in West Africa and witnessing firsthand the sufferings and impoverishment of the people around me, I developed a sense of compassion and willingness to make a difference and help alleviate their sufferings and put a smile on their faces. Healthcare delivery and poverty are two major underlying factors in the challenges faced in Africa, thus, when I got an opportunity to come into the United States, it was my golden ticket to finally give back to the community and make a difference. This led me into the nursing field; I started out as a Certified Nurse Assistant.…
