Joining the New Visions program was one of the wisest decisions I have made. When nurses that I shadow at Unity Hospital express how jealous they are that they didn’t have a program like this when they were in high school, it reminds me to take advantage of this opportunity that not every student receives. I am confident that when I graduate college, I will be able to recollect this program, and how it led me to be successful. I will reminisce about the long hours dedicated to each college-level assignment in determination to receive a grade in the high 90’s, or that moment when I witnessed a five pound baby be born from a cesarean delivery, or even when I stood next to the operating table observing a total knee replacement surgery, while the surgeon and nurses took the time to teach me about what they were doing--an opportunity that not even college nursing students were able to see. The IOM future of nursing, have made essential proposals for the nurses to attain higher education to remain viably important in the evolving health care reform. I would use this paper to examine my fitting into the IOM Future of Nursing suggestions. IOM recommendation 4 underscores on the need to, “increase the proportion of nurses with a baccalaureate degree to 80 percent by 2020” (Institute of Medicine [IOM], 2010, p. 12). Nursing is predominantly seen as a process of caring and developing patient relationships (Chitty & Black, 2007, p. 330-331). My present image of the role of nursing is nursing is selfless at its core; it is caring and compassionate, and assists the ill to a state of optimum health. As a result of RN-BSN program my attitude towards nursing and patients in general is now with one distinct aim of providing care and helping as much as I can in aiding the recovery process. Deciding to go back to school to complete the Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program is a challenge for many nurses. I recognize the top two potential challenges for me are the time commitment and added expense.
