Should College Be Free in America? Every year in America, thousands of new high school graduates pack their bags, move to new cities, and sign papers accepting loans they might not be able to pay back. Students who do not qualify for scholarships have to use up time that would allow them to study properly because they need to get part-time jobs in order to just stay in college. In other countries all over the world, tuition for college is free.…

While I do not believe that college tuition should be free, I say students should be able to pay for their entire year of college if they had a full-time job throughout the summer. This would require students to be committed to their education year around, but would allow for students to graduate with minimal or no debt. If a student could pay for an entire year’s tuition with a summer job, that would eliminate the need for almost all student loans. Some loans may be needed occasionally to cover in the case of unexpected costs or graduate tuition. I also believe that all college loans should be appointed by the government and unsubsidized until five years after graduation.…

But for people who would like to just go to an out-of-state college, Harvard for example the average tuition for that is $22,958. Without a scholarship or the money to afford this people can drop out. Further more why should in state colleges not be free at all? If they were spots that would go to the person that cares and would like to learn is given to those who do not even care and would rather not learn.…

College does indeed cost a lot; however, expensive tuition is not an incentive to make college free. Andrew Kelly, the director of the Center on Higher Education Reform at American Enterprise Institute (AES) says that free college would lead to an increase in taxes and because of the increase in enrollments, the cost to implement this policy would increase even more (The New York Times). He also states that “Rather than spread scarce federal money across all students, policymakers should instead target those resources toward those who need it most” (The New York Times). In other words, tuition-free education should only be an option to those who need it, not those who are able to afford…
