    beginning of the tapestry craze for centuries to follow. In 1258, steps had been made in order to establish the craft of tapestry. A collection of guild statutes known as Book of Etienne Boileau was created which confirmed this establishment. Late gothic tapestries were highly pictorial with a greater variety of colors, as many as forty colors, and gold thread. Borders were wide with patterns of flowers and fruit. Gothic tapestries are described as “line” tapestries because they tend to accentuate line effects, especially vertical lines, which was influenced by Gothic architecture. An example of a tapestry set from the Late Gothic period is the series of six textiles focused on the theme of senses, such as touch and sight, in “Lady with Unicorn” of the 15th century. Moving on to Renaissance Tapestry, bold patterns with sweeping lines and decorative emphasis became the new trend. Designs featured Renaissance architecture and Flemish floral backgrounds with a lot of open space and more shading to give the effect of light and dark. Tapestries also changed in color scheme with the new period changing from Gothic red to color harmonies with white and yellow. There was a heavy influence of the Italian Renaissance encourage by Brussels designers due to Raphael’s appreciation and admiration for the culture.
