Narwhal Social Structure

Narwhals are commonly names to be the unicorn whale because of the horn or tusk. Narwhals scientific name is monodon monoceros. The narwhals’ domain is Eukaryotic because it has a nucleus. The kingdom of narwhals is animalia. The phylum for dolphins is chordata the class of narwhal is mammalia.

The geographic location for narwhal is in Greenland, Canada, Russia, and the Arctic Ocean. The biome where you can find narwhals is on the surface of the Arctic Ocean. Narwhals live in the icy waters of the the Arctic seas. In the winter, the narwhals go deep in water beneath the ice pack in groups of 5 to 10. In the summer, they migrate to shallow, ice free summer grounds where they gather into a crowd in larger group. Narwhals do not stray far from ice.

The predators are killer whales, polar bears, and walruses. The social structure for narwhals is pods. Female narwhals can be old enough to reproduce after 5 years and males after 8 years. One of these behaviors that helps narwhals hunt is to use their long tusks from their head to stun arctic cod by just hitting, using jagged, quick movements. Some behaviors that help them avoid being eaten is to gather in large groups. Some interesting lifestyle information is that males of the species grow a long, spiral tusks, which give the whale its most distinct
