Brine Shrimp (Artemia Salina) are crustaceans found all over the world. They are found in inland bodies of water such as Great Salt Lake, coast of San Francisco, Caspian Sea and other bodies of salt water (GSLEP). Brine Shrimp can start out as living or be born as a cyst. They will born as cyst to survive “through unfavorable conditions and then hatch when conditions are right.” Brine shrimp are able to live in some of the worst living conditions possible such as hot temperatures and high salinity levels in water. Brine Shrimp prefer their living environments to be high in salinity levels and temperature ranging from 77-86 degrees fahrenheit (Berg. 2004). Their preference of their environment goes hand in hand with my hypothesis that they like the extreme conditions,…

Shrimp In the U.S. Shrimp has been very prominent and has been an important part of our diet, but most of us do not acknowledge how important shrimp is or how it ends up in our supermarkets. In Louisiana, the gathering of shrimp goes back to the seventeenth century where bayou residents used seines up to 600 feet in diameter to harvest the seafood. As of today, America harvests roughly over half a million pounds of shrimp and also import an additional 200 million pounds a year. There are more…

One of nature’s finest peculiarities is the mantis shrimp, a crustacean closely related to the pistol shrimp. The pistol shrimp occupy the family Alphidae, while mantis shrimp are the most notable part of the broader order Stomatopoda (Duffy, 2003). Nonetheless, the groups are considered evolutionary brothers and the traits and instincts of the organisms are closely related, as both have the strength and agility to create cavitation bubbles as a direct result of their strike (Patek, 2004). In…

aquaculture of marine shrimps. Along with dissolved oxygen, water temperature and salinity are considered as significant parameters because of their close association in aquatic ecosystem (OSPAR, 2005). The maximum water temperature recommended by Nunes et al., 2005 and ABBC, 2005 was 32°C, though the lower limit recommended by them varied slightly. Boyd (1990) suggests that 28-30°C is essential for the shrimp aquaculture. However, the optimal level mentioned by Chávez (2009) was 18° to 33°C.…

My science fair project is: what is the effect of salinity levels on ghost shrimp? My hypothesis to that question is that all of the shrimp in the first cup, that had no salt, would all survive, the majority of the shrimp of the second cup, that had three pieces of salt, would die and about half of the shrimp in the third cup, that only had one piece of salt, would survive. My science fair project lasted for six days, and during those six days, the salinity levels and the shrimp proved my theory…

Hey there, did you know there are seventy-five different species of stingrays? That's a lot! Sting Rays are also closely related to sharks. The manta rays are the biggest species yet. They can reach up to seven feet wide and a length of fourteen feet long. Their diet is crustaceans, planktons, and small fish. The manta rays like staying just above the seabed to get cleaned. The Whale and the Shrimp Once, long, long ago Shawn and his friends were hanging out in the sand yard. He and his friends didn’t get along perfectly, but they had fun together, most of the time. Bennett was being a fish-face (as per usual) since he was the biggest of all the shrimp. Shawn was the smallest of all his shrimp friends resulting in him being the target of most of Bennett’s teasing. It was on that day, a Tuesday in July, Bennett pushed Shawn over the edge.
