occurrences from the 1950’s to the early 1980’s. Written under the genres of both Drama, Romance and Comedy, it manages to capture the essence of all three (mostly doing its best work between comedy and drama). Its wit and humor will make you laugh while its honesty, tragedy and sentimentality encourage reflection. The movie succeeds not only in content, but execution, pertaining specifically to the special effects artists who were able to place Forrest amidst many historical events and people in various footage. The story begins with a young Forrest Gump (played by Tom Hanks) and his mother in Greenbo, Alabama. As a child he is often mocked for his lack of intelligence by the majority of his peers, except for Jenny (portrayed by actress Robin Wright), who befriends him when they first meet. Despite Forrests’ love for his childhood friend, they soon grow older and go their separate ways. With nearly no…

child. Frost paints for us a scene of utter discord in grief, the wife recalling the callous and inhuman actions of her husband digging the child’s grave, “making the gravel leap and leap in air, leap up, like that, like that”. The vigorous repetition of leaping conveying an image of frivolity and joy. This poem ends on a note of hopelessness, the chasm between husband and wife so broad as to foreshadow marital breakdown. One of my favourite books and movies is Jon Krakauer’s Into The Wild (1996) that was adapted to the screen by Sean Penn in 2007. The film follows the true story of Christopher McCandless’ expedition across North America and his time spent in the Alaskan wilderness where he died alone. During the film viewers are taken along a journey where they see the main character search for his true place in the natural world independent from the trappings of a normal suburban life. The movie is beautifully…
