I loved the serious parts of the song contrasted with the lighter, more joyous, hopeful parts, and the depth that the voices added to the layers of tones in the orchestra. The timing was sweeter to my ears than the other pieces, and I had no trouble at all understanding the correlation between the music and the words (once I found a translation). In "The Mountain Whippoorwill" by Jess Turner, however, while I sincerely…
over the audience started to dim until only the orchestra was illuminated. With his penguin-like coattails wobbling behind him, the conductor stepped onto the gray and worn-out podium, and checked each face of his performers. The small wrinkles on his cheeks slightly lifted as each member grinned back at the conductor. The dimly-glowing white baton began to rise in the air, and with a small twist in the wrist, slowly swirled in front of the orchestra, as if chanting a spell to lure the audience…
La creation du monde is a 20-minute ballet for small orchestra composed in 1923, which outlines the Creation of the world, based on African folk mythology. Influences in the music come from blues and ragtime, particularly in the melodies, and African rhythms. The ballet is in six continuous dance scenes, as follows: 1) Overture 2) The Chaos before Creation 3) The slowly lifting darkness, the creation of trees, plants insects, birds and beasts 4) Man and woman created 5) The desire of man and…
Melody- There's this basic riff repetition being played. As simple as it may be, there is melodic contour which takes shape when the direction changes. This song uses disjunct motion, the intervals change quite a bit. A lot of the singing seems to be staccato, adding to the long pauses. There's also legato that's connecting the song. Harmony- There is no vocal harmony, when he continues the singing, for a breath of time, it adds an echoing effect. The chords are played in a pentatonic format.…
The co-director, Jennifer Lee, has indeed been innovative in her use of camera techniques, special effects, music, lighting, etc. Jennifer Lee use a mixed of 3D and 2D camera effects to bring the film the way it is. The studio also developed several new tools to generate realistic and believable shots, particularly the heavy and deep snows and its interactions with the characters. The need to create new tools take a serious action of creativity and dedication. The use of special effects such as…
Problems in the relationship between composer and public have been evident at least since the early years of the twentieth century. Some composers have alienated the listening public with their music, while others have sought to reach out to the public. In this paper, I will discuss some ups and downs of this issue through the course of the 20th century. I will then give my view on where we stand now in this issue with who, I think, are some popular genres and artists today. I will focus on…
clarinet, and then descending all the way to the bassoon and bass clarinet. This is a kind of premonition of the basic images that will unfold further. In the meantime, another theme comes into Fortissimo: tough, angular, in the jerky sounds of the orchestra without the pipes, trombones, tuba and percussion. Only at the end of it there is a powerful, chord-like chord with the participation of all the brass, supported by a heavy rumbling timpani. The short introduction has ended. The main image…
I have always thought that the use of tempo change relayed a very important message. In this song it is not a huge tempo change, like going into half time, but it just goes to show that even five BPMs can greatly change the emotional direction of a song or piece. In this piece the two guitars act as voices in conversation. They go back and forth using call and response, ether playing together or on there own seprit parts. When the tempo change comes in at one minute and ten seconds it helps…

On Tuesday, September 26, 2017, I attended the East Carolina University School of Music’s Bandorama concert at seven-thirty o’clock in the evening located in Wright Auditorium. Each band played a collection of three to four songs that displayed their best work as performers. Many students, faculty, friends and family attended the concert which allowed a great audience. It was great to hear from…
