During his years in the army he was “an ensign and assistant surgeon” (Britannica 1). “President of the Royal Society, Sir Joseph Banks, recommended Brown to the Admiralty for the post of naturalist abroad a ship, called the investigator” (Britannica 1). Brown had been going through college with a career in medicine but later on found that he desired to study plants instead. When Brown was in London for an outing he had noticed the president of the Royal Society, Sir Joseph Banks. Banks recommended Brown to the Admiralty for the post of naturalist aboard a ship, the Investigator, for surveying voyage along the northern and southern coasts of Australia under the command of Matthew Flinders (Britannica 1). This voyage to Australia opened the eyes of Brown and made him realize his passion of the study of plants. Some of the other scientists working during the years of Brown were: Thomas Young, William Henry, Johann Wolfgang Döbereiner, and Joseph Louis Gay-Lussac. Thomas Young was an English physician who started the wave theory. This theory stated the principle of light interference. William Henry was also an English physician who proposed Henry’s Law. This law states “the mass of a gas which will dissolve into a solution is directly proportional to the partial pressure of that gas above the solution” (Helmenstine 1).
