For my service project I did two types of volunteering. One was being the president of Kilmer's Student Council Association (SCA). In SCA, a group of seventh and eighth grade students, including myself, got together about every other week, for an hour, to discuss, plan, and promote student events. Some of these events included student dances, holiday/seasonal games at lunch, fun runs, fundraisers and Kilmer Spirit Week. First, we would discuss what materials and how much time we would need to pull an event off, such as a dance, and plan activities to go with that event. Then, we would make signs and advertisements to promote the event. Next, we would execute the plan. This often involved decorating the setting, gathering materials, monitoring the event (running stands and games), and cleaning up afterwards. The other volunteering I was a part of was the Halloween/Fall Festivals at local elementary schools. Both festivals had me work one game the entire time. At the first festival, I was running the spider web maze game. This involved monitoring little kids as they attempted to crawl through a string maze and give them a prize if they complete the task successfully (I often gave them a prize even if they touched a string). At the second festival, I was in charge of gathering all the Nerf bullets at the cowboy target game. This included crawling around on the floor (while kids shoot Nerf guns) and gather the bullets that fall on the floor and giving them back to the little kids…
expect to see a reduction in the viral titer in the DF-1 cells that are stably expressing viperin compared to the DF-1 cells that are transfected with an empty vector. Objective 4: Identification of the critical regions and residues important for duck viperin function and localization. Viperin consists of three distinct domains; an N-terminal domain that varies considerably between species and contains both an amphipathic helix and a leucine zipper domain; the N-terminal domain plays an…
Clendinnen recounts the history of the Yucatan peninsula once the Spanish arrived. She splits her recounting into two sections: the Spanish’s perceptive and the Mayan’s perspective. Clendinnen’s recounting the Spanish side of history demonstrates a struggle not only between the Spanish and the new land and its inhabitants, but also the internal conflicts between the Spanish settlers and the friars. At first she tells us how the Spaniards’ interactions with the natives consisted of tribute…
The protein that is in sequence one is Alpha-synuclein. Alpha-synuclein is a protein whose function in the healthy brain is currently unknown (Alpha-synuclein and Parkinson's Disease, n.d.). Parkinson's disease researchers take great interest in it because it is a major constituent of Lewy bodies, which are protein clumps that are the pathological hallmark of Parkinson’s disease (Alpha-synuclein and Parkinson's Disease, n.d.). Researchers work to characterize the protein's role in Parkinson’s…
Strike cannot even buy the culturally accepted entry into manhood, and the viewer sees this develop through the mise-en-scene and narrative. Strike’s nerves lead him to the bar next door, where he asks for a Chocolate Moose, only to be ridiculed by the other men. His older brother Victor is a regular, convening at the bar after long days at work. In this initial introduction to Victor, the viewer sees the stark contrast between younger and older brothers. Strike, now sipping on a piña colada, is…
Competitive personalities and the excessive drive for success was the foundation of the business relationship that once existed between Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick. They both exhibited extreme business practices that tied them together, but also tore them apart. Their mindset for business expansion and longevity are the theories that modern day companies can thrive to achieve. “N one was more important to the “Iron City” than Andrew Carnegie and Henry Clay Frick, whose operations in…
Have you ever heard the saying, “wrong place, wrong time,” or maybe that life is about “being at the right place at the right time”? Or have you ever heard about the cartels and their crimes down in Mexico? Murders, kidnapping, drug trafficking, and lots of partying goes on every day by every cartel and by every drug lord south of the border. Unfortunately, these two topics have much in common in Mexico. Civilians that do not have anything to do with the cartels get caught up in these kind of…
Climate Change and Trade Networks as Causes of the Classic Maya Collapse The ancient Lowland Maya were a thriving and advanced society, capable of building great monuments able to survive to the present. It is therefore a mystery as to why, at the end of the Classic period from the eighth to eleventh century, Maya sites show signs of massive decline and desertion; this is referred to as the “collapse” of the Maya, though it was not an immediate or evenly distributed phenomenon (Douglas,…
The full name of EHBP1 is "EH domain binding protein 1." The symbol for the gene is EHBP1. Other names for the EHBP1 gene are HPC12, NASCIN, and KIAA0903. EH Domain Binding Protein 1 is a protein coding gene. This gene codes for an Eps15 homology domain binding protein. Its protein type is a vesicle. The encoded protein may play a role in endocytic trafficking. It is associated with prostate cancer. This gene is commonly found within the cytosol and the plasma membrane of a cell. It's size is…
about the difficulties she went through from being a young middle schooler to attending college at Harvard. She tells various situations of having been raised in Washington, D.C. and later on moving to Hawaii. At the beginning of the article Lawrence is riding home from school on a bus when a white man boards it. He is the only white person on a bus full of melanin and yet he feels the need to say the n-word. The aftermath was unbearable for young Kimiko, she wrote, “As I walk home from the bus…
