Yes, it’s one of the rarest forms of spyware but when successful it’s one of the most useful tricks to a hacker. Keyloggers have both lawful/ethical and unlawful/unethical uses, and in this paper we will be focussing on the unlawful and unethical applications. Cyber criminals use Keylogging technology to capture identities and other confidential information such as passwords and much more. Keylogging falls into four categories, Hardware, software, wireless intercept and acoustic. For the purpose of this paper we will be focussing on the software, wireless and acoustic categories. Software Keyloggers capture keystroke information as it passes between the computer and the OS. They are implemented as traditional applications in almost all malicious instances of this type, also users participate in some way in the software’s installation. Keylogging applications utilise a hooking mechanism to be able to capture keyboard data. When hackers want to access someone’s data through keylogging, keylogging software will intercept the data from the keyboard, write a copy to a local log file then it forwards the information to the operating system.
